Vitamin B6: The B Vitamin Behind Your Mood, Focus, and Energy (Supplement Ingredient Series)

from The School of Doza Podcast · host NURSE DOZA

In this Supplement Ingredient Series episode, Nurse Doza makes the case for the B vitamin nobody talks about: vitamin B6. Everyone knows B12 — the pills, the injections, the whole routine — but B6 is the cofactor your body leans on to build serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, the neurotransmitters behind mood, focus, and steady daytime energy. He covers who tends to run low, why intake alone doesn't guarantee good status, and where an adaptogen-plus-adrenal formula like Zen fits in. FEATURED PARTNER Zen (Stress Relief) by MSW Nutrition is the formula Nurse Doza reaches for when the B6 conversation turns practical. Each capsule delivers 15 mg of vitamin B6 as P5P — the already-active form your enzymes can use directly — alongside 125 mg of bovine adrenal gland (Argentina) and a five-botanical adaptogen blend: rhodiola, Asian ginseng, eleuthero, schisandra, and licorice, plus vitamin C and 150 mg of pantothenic acid. It's built to support the body's adaptogenic response to everyday stressors and support energy production and stamina. 👉 Get Zen (Buy 2, Get 1 Free): https://zen.mswnutrition.com Three bottles for $138 (regularly $207) — a 90-day supply, free shipping included. If you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medication, or have a kidney or neurological condition, talk with your provider before starting a new supplement. JOIN THE SCHOOL Knowing that B6 matters is one thing. Knowing whether you're actually low — and what to do about it — is where most people stall out. Inside the School of Doza, members work through exactly these questions alongside others doing the same, and every Wednesday at 1 PM Central there's a live group consult (think "Ask Me Anything") to bring your labs, your stack, and your symptoms to. 👉 Start your free trial: https://community.schoolofdoza.com/c/start-here 5 KEY TAKEAWAYS B12 gets the attention. B6 does a lot of the quiet work. B12 is the one people supplement and inject. But vitamin B6 — in its active form, pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (P5P) — is a required cofactor in roughly 140–160 enzymatic reactions, including the ones that build your neurotransmitters. Serotonin, dopamine, and GABA all run through B6. P5P is the cofactor for aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (serotonin and dopamine) and glutamate decarboxylase (GABA). It isn't the raw material — it's the tool the enzyme can't work without. If P5P is short, those pathways run slower. Low B6 status is more common than most people assume. Per NIH data, about 24% of Americans who don't supplement — and still 11% of those who do — carry low plasma P5P (under 20 nmol/L). Average intake looks fine on paper, which is exactly why status and intake aren't the same thing. Some people are more likely to run low. Kidney disease and dialysis, autoimmune and inflammatory conditions (RA, celiac, Crohn's, ulcerative colitis), alcohol dependence, smoking, and certain medications including antiepileptics all associate with lower B6 status. Worth a conversation with your provider, not a self-diagnosis. B6 works better with company, not alone. This is the logic behind Zen's design: active-form B6 plus pantothenic acid and adrenal support for the stress-response side, plus adaptogens like rhodiola, one of the most clinically studied botanicals for stress-related fatigue and mental performance.
