President Trump trekt 5.000 militairen terug uit Duitsland na een felle aanvaring met bondskanselier Merz. Is dit het begin van een Amerikaanse aftocht of valt het allemaal wel mee?Ondanks deze krimp blijft de Amerikaanse aanwezigheid gigantisch. Met ruim 36.000 manschappen is Duitsland nog altijd de grootste Amerikaanse uitvalsbasis na Japan. Trump brengt het aantal simpelweg terug naar het niveau van vóór de Russische invasie in Oekraïne.Maarten van Rossem en Tom Jessen leggen uit waarom er zoveel Amerikaanse troepen in Duitsland zijn. De aanwezigheid gaat terug tot het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog, toen Amerikaanse troepen bases overnamen van nazi-Duitsland. Tijdens de Koude Oorlog werd West-Duitsland de frontlinie tegen de Sovjet-Unie, waardoor de militaire aanwezigheid sterk groeide.Duitsland speelt ook een sleutelrol binnen de NAVO.
