So first thing, let's take out our phones. All right? And open up that alarm app. Who knows where we're waiting here and every day?

Waiting for what? A building. We're waiting for a building. We're waiting for a space, right?

A dwelling place for the Lord, amen? Okay, okay, who's tracking? Raise your hand if you know what we're waiting for. A building.

Okay, many do not. Many are guests tonight. Welcome. I'm so happy you're here, especially you at the Dreds up top.

I'm Jealous, brother. Pray for me, pray for me. So we're so happy that you guys are here tonight and every day, for those of you that are not in the loop, we have been pursuing as a community, a space, a building that could be a dwelling place for the Lord, a base, for a multitude of ministries, for a multitude of everyday believers, for many, many years. So we're in waiting for that and it's the 11th hour.

And pastors Josh and Katie have been leading us so well through the wanderings of the wilderness. Amen. Amen. Okay, so if you got your phone out, the reason you do is because we're going to set an alarm for 30 minutes after you wake up tomorrow.

So who's going to be earlier than 5 a.m.? I just want to get a hand raise. Okay, very cool. Very cool.

Come on. Praise the Lord. Come on. We got the Lord's anointed in the house.

Up before 5 a.m. Okay, so we're going to set an alarm 30 minutes after we wake up and it's going to just be titled, pray for pastors. So you can do that right now. Pray for pastors.

So I know everybody will be up spending time with the Lord because we're carving out those 60 plus minutes to meet with Jesus, the creator of the universe. And we're just going to tack on a little prayer point. We're going to pray for pastor Josh and Katie. And we're going to pray.

And when I say pray, I mean, we're going to stand up. Now, care if you're caffeinated, half caffeinated, decaf, whatever you are, you're going to stand up and you're going to gird on your loins, right? And you're going to ask for the archangel, Michael, to come and clear a path for clarity for these two, okay? Come on.

Can I get a hallelujah? Come on. Are you with me? Are you with me?

Amen. Amen. The reason is that when we pray, our prayers are sent in the heaven. They get mixed with the golden sensor that gets put before the Lord.

And then the Lord sends it like fire down to the earth in response. That's the power of your voice. That's the power of your connection. So we're going to be praying for a path to be forged tomorrow morning.

And there's power when there's unity and agreement. Amen. Amen. We're also going to talk about waiting tonight.

So who likes waiting? Raise your hand. Oh, come on. Come on now.

Don't toy with me. None of us like waiting. But we're all waiting. And some are waiting for a spouse.

Some are waiting for a child. Some are waiting for a house. Some are waiting for a ministry. Some are waiting for a car.

Some are waiting for reconciliation. Some are waiting for a building. But we are all waiting. So how do we wait well?

That's a question. So you can approach me like your guru tonight. I'm going to give you 7.9. I have royally failed in this regard.

Waiting has been such a challenge for me. And if my wife were here, she would testify. Oh, she's going to testify. I can tell you that.

But God has been so faithful to teach us as we failed forward. So last week, Pastor Katie, she was a preacher in a process. I am too. And I'm right in the middle of this message.

I guarantee you, it's more for me than you. But let's discover together. Amen? Let's discover together.

OK. So here is the foundation. A mentor of ours, Eric Watts, says, a sign of your maturity is your level of comfortability and ambiguity. A sign of your maturity is your level of comfortability and ambiguity.

Here's a lie. One day, you won't be waiting. Oh, have we been there? I can see it.

Just over there. It's just through the trees and over the hill. Peace. That's a lie.

You will always be waiting. You're not home yet. Surprise. I know it's nice.

The American Dream is cozy. It's got a way of making you settle in. But they say you're home. It's not Kansas.

All right? We are in process. We are foreigners and aliens and exiles in the land. We're citizens of heaven.

This world's going to make sense to you. If it does, you've got to ask a question. Does Jesus make sense to me? Come on.

They say you're home. And God has put eternity in your hearts. So that means that you have this heartbeat. Somebody help me out.

There we go. Somebody, you've got a baby heart. Come on. Pray for me, too.

I want a soft baby heart. But we're waiting. And we're waiting to be home with him. So we're journeying together.

After this promised land is another promised land, I guarantee it. Bible spells this out. Psalm 40 is a great example. David is waiting on the Lord.

He's like, my enemy's wear a hand. I was waiting. Then what? You deliver me.

I will not be silent. I will tell of your deliverance in the great congregation. And then what happens at the end? God deliver me.

Because another enemy is at my doorstep. So he's waiting, delivered, waiting again. This is the flow of life. You're not getting out of this one.

It's waiting, deliverance, waiting, deliverance. And deliverance is so sweet. Right? So sweet.

But it's so short. And waiting is so long. It really is. It really is.

And we hate waiting because we hate ambiguity. And we have this feeling like, I need clarity. How many times do you say that, man, if I could just get clarity? I just really need it.

I'm just assert. It's like, man, we're all discerning. It's like every season. I need clarity.

But here's a cover all. All right? Here's a cover all. The reason that we need clarity is entitlement.

Waiting hurts. Ooh, it's painful. My friends, my mentors, they can tell you, if you are waiting, it's going to put your blemishes on blast. They've seen it in me.

Oh, it exposes. If you choose to go together in the journey, oh, prepare to be vulnerable. Prepare to be laid bare. Because they're going to see it.

It's not easy to wait. But I think we can drill down a bit more. I think we can get even a little bit more clear. In addition to entitlement, what does that look like, specifically one?

I think we need clarity because we have this over-inflation of our importance and role in God's work. We have this over-inflation of our importance and role in God's work. He's a big, big God. I'm just a little guy here.

He's a big, great God. I'm just a little guy. What that means? I don't have to worry about where I'm going.

Why does that have to focus on where he is? Why does that have to meet with him? Number two, we have an over-inflation of our ability to carry knowledge. We see this in Genesis 3, Adam and Eve, the original sin.

You could say that was pride, or you could say it was impatience. They were walking with God. Then the serpent calms, the sneaky snake. And Eve's like, ah, well, God's not here.

So it's like she could have waited and just talked to him. And Abba would have been like, oh, yeah, that's the serpent. Don't listen to him. You just listen to my voice, my daughter.

But she's impatient. And she eats from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. And their eyes are opened. And they can't carry his perspective.

We couldn't carry God's perspective for our lives. If he was to download it in you today, your brain would literally explode. You can't carry his perspective. In addition with that, so many times we say, man, I just need to know.

We just need to know. Why do you need to know? Because you don't want him. Sorry, Ben there.

Confession. I just need to know. Because I don't want to lean. I just want the leaning to end because I'm forced to trust.

OK, number three. Why do we declare this over inflation of our responsibility? I can relate to this one. And I think this is both good and bad.

Here's the good. Many of you have to fear the Lord. You're like, man, I just want to obey. I want to honor and glorify Jesus.

Come on. That is awesome. That is so good. You got to soak the flames of that fire in your friend group.

That is good news. But we can very easily slip into responsibility. I got to figure it out. And here's the thing.

God is all about efficacy. But he's not about efficiency. So he's going to get you to where you need to go. But he's going to corkscrew and interweave and lock and backstep.

And this way and that way, as you go. That's his process. That's his way of forming us. So if you feel as if, man, I just got to nail it, here's the news slash.

You never will. Responsibility is a mask for our control. I just want to be responsible. I just got to save us some funds for retirement.

So you don't need him. I'm not saying don't save up for retirement. What I'm saying is search your heart. Let him know you.

Watch some motives, right? So good news. You're not going to nail it. It's awesome.

I'm learning to enjoy that. Jesus is the shepherd. We are his. Cheap.

All right. So in prep for this message, I went to the Google. I just want to confirm. Sheep are dumb, right?

Because I don't want some animal lovers. Some pete person come up and say sheep are so smart. I rebuke you in the name of the Lord. So I just wanted to confirm we're golden, right?

So I just type our sheep smart and smack dab right in the middle of the Google. Contrary to popular misconception, sheep are extremely intelligent animals. Capable of problem solving. Oh my goodness, Lord forgive me.

They are considered to have a similar IQ level to cattle and are nearly as clever as pigs. You're nearly as clever as a hog. Come on. Big God, little guy.

Jesus is the alpha and omega. He is the beginning and the end. He's the one that was and is and will come. He's the one that I oppose the universe by the word of his power.

And he's outside of time, space and matter. This is mind-numbing. He's outside of time, space and matter. So just as you are living in this present moment, he's living in your promised land.

Whoop, I'm going to step into this. He sees the terrain. He sees the relationships. He sees the connections.

He sees the resources you need. And then side step, he's in the promised land of the promised land. Oh, and then over here, he's in the rocking chair next to you. He sees your grandchildren.

And then Tiki, Tiki, Timo, he's in your past. Just as he's in your present right now. He can't be put in our boxes. What's the point?

He can get you from where you've been to where you're going. He knows the way. I am the way. I am the truth.

I am the life. Whoo. Come on. So be comforted.

Be comforted is not up to you. Learning to lead is not nearly as important as learning to follow. Learning to lead is not nearly as important as learning to follow. Man, we all want to be high-powered leaders, right?

Jesus has got the batteries. He's got the juice. We got to let him fill us. We are coming empty.

We live in America, right? We're in America. And American culture, Babylon, which is the kingdom of darkness, the kingdom under Satan's governance, it has a value system. It values control.

It values predictability, concise measurement, strategic planning. The kingdom of life, the kingdom of God, is established through trust. Oh, he's so gentle. Isn't that amazing?

I just want you to trust me. I'm learning to trust my shepherd. Trusting is hard. Not easy.

And we have tendencies. Now, underneath these tendencies are fears, OK? And we could delve into these fears. Go to gospel.

If you want to know, what are these fears? Because I feel like I got a lot of them. Go to gospel class, all right? But we're going to talk about some of these tendencies that crop up in waiting.

And there's several of them. And they're important to identify because they reveal to us the crutchets, the lesser lovers that we lean into when we're in the wilderness, OK? So number one, we have this tendency to busy, OK? Someone's like, that's me.

All right, we have this tendency to busy. Jesus says, and Luke 11, there's a house. Demons in it. Gets expelled.

Goes to waterless places. The person's like, great, I'm going to clean up. I'm going to sweep. I'm going to get nice in an order.

But it's never filled. The demon comes back, which said at home, he's worse than itself. And the situation is worse than it was in the beginning, all right? So what does this teach us?

Well, whoever was stewarding this household, sweat without an order, good things. But they didn't fill their house with the power of God. Your good things will keep you back from the presence of God. No, you may say, uh-uh.

The presence of God is with me wherever I go. True. But there is a greater glory to be experienced in fellowship with him and walking with him and obeying him. This is Mary and Martha.

They're both near him, but only Mary's with him. Martha's in the kitchen. I want to be in the living room. Turn your neighbor, so I want to be in the living room.

Come on. Two, we have this tendency to abdicate. We have this tendency to abdicate. Aaron, and the golden calf, is a great example of this.

They're at Mount Sinai. Who? The three million plus Israelites? Aaron, Moses, Joshua, the whole squad.

And they're camping out, and they've experienced some mighty miracles of God. I mean, when they were in Egypt, there was 10 plagues that came against Pharaoh and the small G gods of the land. Then there's a parting of the Red Sea. There's the bitter water made sweet.

There's manna from heaven. There's water from the rock. And then in Exodus 19, you have arguably the most powerful manifestation of God's presence outside of Exodus 33 in the entire Old Testament. God comes down to Mount Sinai, and he says, Moses, come and meet with me.

And there is a great cloud flooding the mountain, and there's thunder, enlightening, and shaking, and quaking, and fire at the top. And there's a bill of smoke reaching up to heaven, and a trumpet blast that gets louder and louder and louder. And the Israelites are like, no, no, no, no, no. We're not going.

And don't even let God talk to us lest we surely die. Moses goes up, 49th. Gets a new covenant, re-established, confirmed the law, direction, comes down. And what's going on?

Aaron is leading the Israelites into worship of a shiny cow. I mean, it's unbelievable. He's been gone 40 days. He comes down.

He's like, Aaron, what's going on? And here's like, dude, we didn't know what you were. He's like, what? Like, I was on the mountain.

It's right there. Like you saw me walk up. I've been up there in the fire with God. And he's like, I know, I know, but the people, they just wanted gods to go before them.

They weren't impatient. So I took the gold they gave me. I threw it in the furnace and then out came this cow. I mean, it's crazy.

And I'm not exaggerating. Read the story yourself. It's absolutely ludicrous. And yet what's worse than the excuse that Aaron gives is that at the back of that excuse is an empty desire.

They didn't want Yahweh. The Israelites didn't want Yahweh. Make for us gods to go before us. You may be thinking, well, this isn't me, right?

I'm not propping up an idol in my house. No, it may not be in this way. But what's Netflix to you? Come on, you got to watch that show.

Why? Well, my kids have all these athletics. And it's just life. It's not.

You have a choice. What do you want? You can self-manage and self-govern your life. That's what God wants you to do.

He wants you to steward your life faithfully. And then in addition with this, while we're in abdication, some of us are seeking out mirages, right? We're like, OK, there's the promised land. I think it's that way.

Whoa, maybe it's over here. That looks like an oasis. And this happens with relationships. This happens with houses.

This happens with work. This happens with ministries. You get fatigued. And you look at a lesser lover, and you kind of pursue it.

And you say, I'm just going to ask God to stop me if it's not his will. OK, I've heard this a lot. I'm sure I've done it many times. I'm going to go do this.

And God, if it's not, you will stop me. I think there's an upgrade. If you've done that, hey, that's all right. Forget what lies behind.

Press forward. But here's the problem with that. Is that God isn't your police officer, OK? So he doesn't want you to make decisions in your own sand castle and say, is this OK?

Did I step out of line? He's abd abdah. So he wants you to birth and manifest his longings. He wants through intimacy with you to give you his heart and his direction.

He doesn't want you to do anything apart from him. That's why Jesus isn't John 15. For apart from me, you can do nothing. But if you'll bite at me, you'll bear much fruit.

Last, we had this tendency to control. Abraham's another good example of this. So in Genesis 15, there's a mighty moment. God says, Abraham, look up at the stars ahead.

Can he number him? No. So will your descendants be. In fact, today, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, all attach their faith to these two chapters.

Genesis 15 and Genesis 16, it's remarkable. Over half the earth. And Abraham in this moment has the fear of the Lord fall upon him, dread, and terror, and great darkness, and God establishes his covenant with him. It says, through all your people, will my people come?

Only through you will I establish my line. You will be a set apart and holy nation. It's incredible. And then one chapter later, what's he doing?

He's sleeping with a slave woman. He couldn't hold out for Isaac. So he settled for Ishmael. See, when we're waiting, we have a tendency to grab.

I got to figure this out. I'll dress up a plant. Well, this seems to make sense if I connect the dots. It's probably going to be that.

So whoop. Now I've never done this. But if I were to do this, it could look like something like this. So last December, like I said, we've been waiting.

10 years ago, had this encounter with God, he marked me for the nations. I've been chasing down that dream in his heart ever since. I've just been absolutely snowballing on down the mountain. But in this process, this past December, we were kind of in a very important moment where we were making some critical decisions.

And Sophie and I were in the place of prayer, and we felt like we were just tip towing our way across the finish line. We're right there. And God said to us, Nick, you're getting on a train. So you're getting on a train.

And I'm in the engine. I'm at the front. I'm guiding the whole train. You're just in the car behind me.

You're in the passenger car. I just want you to be still, know that I'm God. I'm getting to where you need to go. And we said, all right, we're going to take that to the bank and cash it.

So for the next several weeks, we just went back to this word. And it guided us into that promised land. It was spot on. It was a beautiful moment.

But then we got in the promised land. And seven pass opened up before us. And we needed to discern again. So this is about six months ago now.

I'm at IHob, Kansas City. I sat down. We had some additional decisions we were needing to make in this realm. And I'm reminded of this word that God had given us about the train.

And he's in the engine. I'm in the passenger car. And we're going to where we need to go. So I'm journaling.

And I'm writing this out. And this man comes up to me and he says, hey, bro, what's your name? I'm like Nick. He says, Nick, from the second you got in here, I got this word for you from the Lord.

I saw Jesus. And he was at the engine car of a train. And you were in the passenger car behind him. And you were in a desert land.

And it was slowly exiting this wilderness. And going light speed ahead into a land of fruitfulness and abundance. And I said, hallelujah. That is for me, brother.

What's your name? He says, I'm Eric. I said, Eric, pray for me, man. That's good.

So good. So I sit down. Eric comes back. And he says, hey, I just got to clarify one thing.

Whatever it is. And he says, that wilderness season is so short. And I was like, come on. And he's like, so short.

And then you were going super fast. And I'm like, yes, prophesy your promise, brother. You are my prophet now. You're coming with me.

It was so good. All right. Come on. My kind of people in the room.

We like to go fast, right? I can't tell you how many times, over the past six months, I refer to this word. I really wish Sophie was here. Because she could, again, testify.

So we've had many opportunities that have just ever so slightly propped themselves open to us. And the second they do, in the place of prayer, I'm like, Sophie, I can feel it in my spirit. This is it. We are leaving the wilderness.

We're about to go fast. I got to hit me on my soul. We're going straight forward. Jesus hit the gas.

And then it's like the SpongeBob moment. 24, I was late though. I am in my prayer closet. On my knees, a small candle's late, the lights are off and I'm weeping.

God, you said it was gonna work. You said we were going fast. Opportunity doesn't fan out. I get up and shake the four walls of my apartment building and frustration.

I mean, this is like real. I'm joking, no, it's real. It's real, let's be honest. So I'm with you.

I'm with you in this journey. This isn't easy, but it's so good. It's so good because Jesus preaches to us through his personhood. He preaches to us through his personhood.

I mean, learn about the Messiah's ministry in this place awaiting. Imagine this, heaven goes bankrupt to send a carpenter to a hoe-dunk town and a small little nation, smack dab in the middle of the earth. And for 30 years, he's got a hammer, he's got a nail, he's got some wood. And I love Matthew and Luke.

I can't get out of the first few pages of these books. What is he doing? What does that look like? Be there with you.

I'm gonna be that kind of labor. And he's driven. He's driven to get to Jerusalem, to get to the cross, the joy set before him. And yet he's perfectly content.

Fueled by the future, present in the moment. Faithful in the moment. Full of joy. And here's what's remarkable.

He's working with the very same elements and materials that are gonna be used to crucify him. Talk about a reminder of where you're going. And yet, he never cared. He was never anxious.

His heart was at rest. I mean, guys, that's like you having the precise, the four knowledge that you're gonna be put up to a firing wall. Oh, the bullets are gonna go through you. You're not gonna die just yet.

It's gonna be excruciating. Very painful. Brutal, brutal death. You have that four knowledge.

Now for decades prior to, you're working in a gun manufacturing plant. You're handling bullets, barrels, metals. And yet your heart is still. Your heart is present.

Your mind is not wandering. It's fixed on him. Jesus said my food is to do the will of him who sent me. Maybe there's a secret in that.

So what did Jesus know about following? What did he know about waiting? Well, I think he knew waiting is not punishment. It feels like that sometimes.

It's not punishment. It's not doing nothing. It's not releasing your assignment or suppressing your zeal. It's far less about letting go and more about grabbing hold.

But it's not grabbing hold and tight-fisting your circumstances. Man, that's when you slip into introspective quiet times. Where all you're thinking about is me, me, me, it's naval gazing and your prayers and intercession. The farther they say, reach is the second floor of your house, your children.

Man, we gotta get our perspective bigger. We gotta get our eyesight farther, right? So waiting is not punishment. And it's not grabbing hold of circumstances, but it is grabbing hold of him.

That's why I have a daily prayer. God, would you increase my zealos, my zeal for your presence, your purposes, and your praise? I just want your will. I just want your way.

I'm all in on you. I'm all out on me. I'm all in on you. It's in that place of waiting that we find freedom.

Because we realize, oh, I don't have to think about what's not. I can think about what is. I can think about what is. So what is waiting?

One, waiting is God's way of wooing us. It's God's way of loving us and causing us to love him. Jeremiah 2 reads it like this. This is what the Lord says.

I remember how eager you were to please me as a young bride long ago. When? How you loved me and followed me even through the barren wilderness. From Egypt to the promised land.

You became my bride. You were my beloved. In those days, Israel was holy to the Lord. The first of his children, all who harmed his people, were declared guilty.

I protected you. And disaster fell on them. I the Lord have spoken. The wilderness, the waiting is where God woo's us.

That's why. Song of Solomon 8, 5 says, who is this coming up from the wilderness leaning on his beloved? Her beloved. Number 2, waiting is God's way of emptying us.

Everyone say empty. Okay. It's just crucible for calling. It's just crucible for calling.

Moses learned this. Exodus 2, Moses kills the Egyptian. He's trying to free his people by his own hands. Then his buddy, the Israelites, says, dude, I saw what you did to that Egyptian.

You can do that to me. So he goes to the Midian. He's out of the wilderness for 40 years. He's hollowed out.

He's low. He's little. Then Exodus 3, the encounter at the burning bush, God meets him. And Moses said this point, it's like, no, no, no.

And God's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I need you to go back to your people. I'm going to cause you to deliver them. And he says, not me. You got the wrong guy.

Get somebody else. I'm ashamed. I'm inadequate. I'm afraid.

I don't have what it takes. And God's like, exactly. That's why I want you. You're empty.

You're broken. Someone mustn't have had a broken. I just want you to know you came to the right place. You're here for a reason.

And if that's in your spirit right now, I want you to look at me intently. God will deliver you. Whole fast. Oh man, a guy.

Oh woman, a guy. Do not be shaken. Come to him. Let him love you.

Do not leave until you're transformed. He'll take you from one degree of glory to the next. You're here for a reason. Number 3, waiting is God's way of receiving glory.

Waiting is God's way of receiving glory. So again, Exodus 2. Moses drills the Egyptian. Right?

And then in the book of Acts, it says, at that time, Moses thought he was going to free the Egyptians by his own hand, by his own doing, by his own strength. Right? So maybe Moses thought I'm going to free an individual. Maybe he thought he was going to free a people.

Either way, God's like, bro, your vision's too small. Okay? I'm going to receive my glory. Let's knock me that small.

And I'm going to bless you. It's not going to be that small. Your vision's too small. You thought I was going to make you a deliverer of just the people?

I'm going to make you an archetype for salvation for all of human history. That's why the book of Hebrews says that Jesus is the greater Moses. He laid the foundation. He was the blueprint for the Messiah's ministry.

Is that amazing or what? But his vision was too small. So God had to expand the horizons, right? In addition with this, we see that at this time the Israelites experienced God's vision in glory as well.

Okay? In Egypt, they're crying out for deliverance. In the 10, during the 10 plagues, they're crying out for deliverance. By the Red Sea, they're crying out for deliverance.

And all throughout this storyline, there's this theme. God saw the people of Israel and God knew. You and your waiting. God knows.

He knows. But he works in the 11th hour. He's not going to do it in the first or the second or third. He's going to do it in the 11th hour.

Exodus 14 Israelites. By the Red Sea, Egyptians are closing in. What happens? God says this is perfect.

I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they shall go in after them. And I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his hosts, his chariots, and his horsemen. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord when I have gotten glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen. God has a plan.

Hallelujah. Turn your neighbors to God as a plan. God has a plan. God just didn't just get glory over the Egyptians.

What happens when the spies go into the land and they're at Jericho and they meet Rahad? What happens? She knows. Oh, they've all heard what Yahweh did to the Egyptians.

God got glory over the surrounding nations. God's vision is bigger. God's glory is better. Okay?

And it was at this time, as they're by the Red Sea, the pillar of cloud that was leading them comes behind them. Steps in between the Israelites and the Egyptians. What does that tell us? God is just as concerned with protecting us as he is with leading us.

So brother and sister, he's got your back. Every day he's got your back. Pastor's Yash and Katie, everybody say, he's got your back. Come on.

We gotta tear down heaven. He said, he's got your back. Let's go. So what now?

How do we wait well? Knowing this? Well, we come. We come.

We identify this is key. This isn't a season. If you walk away with anything tonight, walk away with this. It's not a season.

Waiting's not a season. You'll keep waiting. You'll keep waiting. But will you learn to trust?

Will we settle in? Is it a leadership of our shepherd? So we come. We come to who?

We come to the one who is able to do far more abundantly than we could ask or think. And if you can see it where you're going, chances are it's too small. It's beyond. It's abundantly more.

Okay? And this is where it is important to know I'm not just doing what I can do. I'm doing what needs to be done. There are a lot of good things you can do.

But how do we make the transition to God? What needs to be done to see X, Y, and Z? Now you may say, what's X, Y, and Z? That's where you have to know your calling.
