Walking by the Spirit
from The Word Alone Podcast · host Nathan A. Hughes
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”Galatians 5:22–23The Christian life is not about trying harder in our own strength; it is about walking closer with Christ and allowing the Holy Spirit to work within us. Paul describes these qualities as the fruit of the Spirit. Fruit does not appear overnight, nor is it attached to a tree by human effort. It grows naturally when the tree is healthy and rooted where it should be.The same is true in our lives. As we spend time in God’s Word, seek Him in prayer, and obey His voice, the Holy Spirit gradually produces His character in us. Love replaces selfishness. Joy remains even when circumstances are difficult. Peace calms an anxious heart. Longsuffering gives patience with difficult people. Gentleness and goodness shape the way we treat others. Faith keeps us trusting God. Meekness brings humility, and temperance enables us to exercise self-control.These qualities cannot be manufactured by determination alone. They are the evidence of a life surrendered to Christ. Rather than asking, “Am I doing enough?” perhaps we should ask, “Am I abiding closely enough?” The nearer we walk with the Lord, the more His fruit becomes evident in our words, attitudes, and actions.PrayerHeavenly Father, thank You for giving me Your Holy Spirit. Help me to abide in You each day so that Your fruit may be seen in my life. Teach me to love as Christ loved, to trust You in every circumstance, and to reflect Your character in all I say and do. In Jesus’ name, Amen. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit thewordalone.substack.com
