"Walking the Camino" Filmmaker Lydia B. Smith

from The Frontier Beyond Fear · host Susan Larison Danz

Lydia B. Smith, producer and director of the highly acclaimed, award-winning documentary Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago, shares insights from filming this remarkable pilgrimage on the trail and into the soul - a journey she herself has experienced. Called a "brilliant documentary" by Martin Sheen, the Oregon-made, non-profit film has resonated with audiences on 3 continents since its debut in April, selling out immediately and winning multiple awards at film festivals. Over 1200 years ago, Spain's 500-mile-long Camino de Santiago trail served as a major passageway for millions of pilgrims during the Middle Ages. Today, several hundred thousand people a year descend on the mostly unpaved path with little more than a backpack and a pair of boots. The film journeys into the hearts and minds of 6 modern-day pilgrims, exploring not only the physical challenges of the journey, but their personal paths to fulfillment. Lydia B. Smith makes her feature film directorial debut with Walking the Camino. The veteran documentary filmmaker lived in Barcelona for 6 years. Over the past 2 decades, she has produced hard-hitting specials for CNN and PBS, as well as her own educational shorts. Walking the Camino is coming to Portland for an exclusive 1-week engagement at the Hollywood Theater starting Sept. 6. There is also a fundraiser on Sept. 8.
