Walt & Tina Wilkins: Reflections on the Road They Chose

Today’s episode is the first of several that will focus on entrepreneurs who create art through their words, music, or visual arts.  They move us to tears. They move us to action. They move us towards each other. They move us to discover joy or our truest selves.  They provide a beautiful respite from the pressures of life. We are a musical family. My father-in-law was a minister of music for decades. His love of jazz was passed along to Mark, and on to our kids. I remember coming into the boys’ room one night when they were in high school and found them listening to a radio station out of San Antonio that played jazz on Saturday nights. What in the world? They were into all the popular music of their high school years, but jazz? It was an unexpected connection between generations.  We lived in Texas for many years, and loved living near Austin, known as “the live music capital of the world”. We began following different Americana musicians about 15 years ago, many of whom would play at Gruene Hall, the oldest dancehall in Texas, just outside New Braunfels. One of the first musicians we started following was Walt Wilkins. He is one of the most talented, generous singer/songwriters around. I’m joined today by Walt & his wife, Tina Mitchell Wilkins—a funny, talented singer/songwriter in her own right.
