Why is God angry? Wrath and vengeance are the proper and correct attitude of a judge who has been given the task of upholding justice. Justice demands punishment for a wrong done, and it is the role of the judge to dispense justice. Only the criminal wants a judge with a soft heart - who has only compassion for the criminal subdued in chains, looking remorseful, maybe even pleading for his life. If he has great compassion for the guilty he could be moved to be lenient and to hold back punishment that is due. But, if he also has compassion for the victims, - he will look across the aisle and see the hurt, pain, and loss of those whose lives have been forever changed by the crime. Then, his compassion will stir in him a sense of wrath and anger at what has been done. Out of his compassion for those wronged, in wrath he seeks vengeance - the appropriate punishment for the crime. Thus, God's wrath is the right expression of His love towards those wronged, towards the assault on His own glory and character, and His love and zeal for justice.
