Warning Signs: Peculiar Prophets | Ross Savill

The Old Testament Prophets often come across as being a fairly intense group of individuals. They seem to be angry, cranky and even a bit over the top. Amos said, "Hear this word, you cows of Bashan … who oppress the poor and crush the needy" (Amos 4:1) and “Now then, I will crush you, as a cart crushes when loaded with grain.” (Amos 2: 13). Isaiah says, "Stop bringing meaningless offerings. Your incense is detestable to me … I cannot bear your evil assemblies" (Isaiah 1:13). There are many other examples - the books of the Prophets are filled with similarly angry sentiments, and yet they claimed that they spoke on behalf of God. So, it is important to ask the question - what do we make of God if these words are his words? More importantly we need to ask - are there any warnings from Amos that we should heed? This sermon kicks off our new series on the Old Testament Book, Amos, called Warning Signs. The book of Amos can’t be described as a happy book, it’s not an easy read.
