Was There a 'Virgin Birth' Story in the First Christian Bible?

At first it seemed like a simple question with a simple answer - but like with most things concerning Pre-Nicene Christianity there turned out to be much more to the story, including the removal of the word 'virgin' from the gospel of Matthew.
