Was Will Justified or Was Chris Doing His Job?

TRIGGER ALERT! Will Smith was awarded the Best Actor award at the Oscars but prior to his win, he slapped Chris Rock for telling a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. Will returned his seat and yelled at Rock to "Keep his wife's name out his mutha------ mouth?". Footage later showed that this was not an instantaneous reaction by Smith. Was he compelled to defend his wife's honor via her visible display of discontent? Was Rock simply doing his job as a comedian on a platform where comedic hosts are chosen and routinely roast celebrities in the audience?
