Wasilla, AK - Fast Times at the Corn Mush Palace with Legitimate Pilot Curly Ray

Welcome to Wasilla, Alaska!  In 1917 the US government planned the Alaska Railroad to intersect a wagon road near the mining town of Knik.  Settlers bought up land around the new railroad station and Knik began a steady decline.  Wasilla Station became the new supply station for the mining an trapping trade in the area.  In the 1930s the US government moved 200 farming families from the Upper Midwest to the area to start a farming community.  Because of this move, the accents in the area still have some remnants of that regional accent.  The town was the start of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race from 1973 to 2002, but reduced snow cover caused by a warming climate forced the location to change to Fairbanks.  There are a number of notable people who have lived in Wasilla, but former mayor, Governor of Alaska, and vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin is probably the most recognizable.  Palin was born in Idaho, but moved to Wasilla in 1972.  We hope you enjoy our trip to Wasilla!Small Town News--whose headline is it, anyway? @SmallTownNewsImprov
