Jovan Adepo portrays a Black trumpet player who is forced to perform in blackface in Babylon Movieninja, and Li Jun Li plays a lesbian singer whose career fails due to her race and sexual orientation. These are just a few examples of the paint-by-numbers characters that are, in theory, meant to illustrate the prejudices of the time. But the film rushes over their experiences in such a way that it nearly would've been better if Chazelle had completely ignored them.
