Water & SDGs - Downscaling WATer relevant SDGs (DWAT-SDGs)

from IFPRI Podcast · host International Food Policy Research Institute

POLICY SEMINAR Water & SDGs - Downscaling WATer relevant SDGs (DWAT-SDGs) 2023 UN Water Conference Side Event Jointly organized with the International Water Resources Association (IWRA) MAR 20, 2023 - 10:00 TO 11:00AM EDT Localizing and realizing SDGs will require deep transformations in every country and region, including contextualizing toward a locally relevant subset of goals. Localization is essential due to the diversity of local conditions and priorities across regions in both the developed and developing world, local disagreements over priorities, competing interests, trade-offs, and synergies among multiple sectors and stakeholders, and country- and region-specific risks posed by future uncertainties. However, current SDG localization efforts are hampered by lack of appropriate institutional support (especially the participation of local communities), future uncertainties and risk, limited interactions between science and practice communities, and limited communication among countries and regions. To support localizing SDGs, the International Water Resources Association is increasing support to SDG implementation through a task force committee (TFC) on Water & SDGs. The overall goal of the TFC is to downscale WATer-relevant SDGs (DWAT-SDGs) to the country/region, basin, and local scales to facilitate SDG realization and support sustainable management of water resources in a climate crisis. This session will allow member countries to exchange existing tools and case studies linked to SDG 6 implementation and will develop suggestions and partnerships for expanding SDG 6 localization, making an important contribution to the Water Action Agenda. Overview and introduction Ximing Cai, Ben Chie Yen Professor, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign A SDG localisation framework for guiding sustainable development leadership in the Australian water sector Paul Satur, Research Fellow and Lecturer, Monash University Sustainable Development Institute Localizing SDG6 in India: Where to start?
