Welcome to Waurika, The Parakeet Capital of the World!  Unfortunately there is no explanation for the parakeet claim.  Waurika was incorporated in 1903.  The town's website states that the name means "clear water", while other sources state the name is the anglicized version of the Comanche word for worm eater.  Guess which one we like better?  The Army Corps of Engineers built the Waurika Dam at Beaver Creek, creating Waurika Lake in 1980.  Waurika Lake is now a hot spot for outdoor activities.  Waurika was the birthplace of Irene Champlin, who played Dale Arden in 1954-1955 syndicated TV series Flash Gordon.  Join us lakeside for psychedelic trip through Waurika! Small Town News--whose headline is it, anyway? @SmallTownNewsImprov
