Waverley Volume 2 Chapter XXXVII - Waverley Is Still in Distress

In which the wounded Waverley is carried with great care through a wild Highland glen to a bleak and smoky hut, where he is tended with a mixture of vigilance and restraint by mysterious Highland wardens, among whom a gentle, secretive female presence stirs his anxious curiosity. As his strength slowly returns, and thoughts of escape arise, a clandestine act by a young lass kindles new hopes, leading to a sudden, guarded preparation for his departure from this strange and solitary sanctuary.
