He was born in New Smyrna Beach, Florida in 1923. Served in World War II as a radioman and tail gunner, flying more than fifty bombing missions over Italy. If his name is familiar it’s probably because he won the Hugo Award for A Canticle for Leibowitz in 1961 for Best Novel. It’s considered to be a masterpiece.
