The behavioral immune system is a phrase used to refer to a suite of psychological mechanisms that allow individual organisms to detect the potential presence of infectious parasites or pathogens in their immediate environment, and to engage in behaviors that prevent contact with those objects and individuals. The existence of a behavioral immune system has been documented across many animal species, including humans.Many mammalian viruses have acquired genes from their hosts during their evolution. The rationale for these acquisitions is usually quite clear: the captured genes are subverted to provide a selective advantage to the virus. In the case of Syncytin, we have the opposite situation, where a viral gene has been sequestered to serve an important function in the physiology of a mammalian host.
