The longest human lives lived are not even as long a candle flicker against the backdrop of eternity. Yet the ancient witnesses declare that all of us are fully seen and fully known by the creator and sustainer of the universe in whom we live and move and have our being. We matter. Our lives matter. Our relationships matter. Just as the tiniest creatures in the sea are fully known by and sustained in the ocean, so we are in God. We are known, every scape, every scratch, every scar, every hair, every breath. Hagar in her toughest moments came to know that God is the one who sees us. God is the one who knows and loves us.
