We Aren’t Leaving Until… An Altar Dedicated and a People Clean | Numbers 7-8

from Trinity Church of Lake Nona

Shoes on. Bags packed. Keys in hand. Ready to go—right? Not quite. In Numbers, the journey doesn’t begin with motion—it begins with worship. Before Israel could take a single step toward the Promised Land, two things had to happen: the altar had to be dedicated, and the people had to be cleansed. In Numbers 7–8, God makes it clear—before His people move outward, they must first move inward. Worship isn’t the warm-up to the journey. It empowers the journey. This week, we’ll explore how each tribe brought identical offerings for twelve straight days—reminding us that every gift and every person matters. We’ll see how the Levites were not only cleansed but offered as living sacrifices, representing the firstborn and pointing us to Jesus—the true Substitute, the Light of the world, and the voice who still speaks from the mercy seat. Whether you’re feeling stalled in the wilderness or eager to move forward, come join us as we re-center on the One who prepares us for what’s next. Before we walk, we worship. Here is our outline: I. We Aren’t Leaving Until the Altar Is Dedicated (Numbers 7) A. 12 Days of Dedication: Every Gift, Every Tribe, Every Life Matters (7:1–88) B. The Point of the Party: Worship Culminates in Communion (7:89) II. We Aren’t Leaving Until the People Are Clean (Numbers 8) A. The Shining Lamp: The Light Comes Before the Life (8:1–4) B. The Substitute Son: The Levites— A Living Offering (8:5–22) C. The Seasons for Service: Sacred Rhythms of Work and Rest (8:23–26) ⸻ Adult Discussion Questions 1. Why do you think God delayed Israel’s departure until the altar was dedicated and the Levites were consecrated? • What does that tell us about God’s priorities? 2. The tribal leaders each brought the same offering, yet every gift is recorded in detail. • How does this challenge our view of “repetitive” obedience or “ordinary” faithfulness? 3. What part of the Levites’ consecration stood out to you most—cleansing, substitution, or commissioning? Why? • In what ways do you see Jesus fulfilling each of these? 4. Where in your life might God be saying: “Don’t move forward until you’ve dedicated this to Me”? • Is there a habit, relationship, resource, or area of your heart that remains unconsecrated? 5. How does the image of God speaking from the mercy seat encourage you? • What can you do this week to create space to listen for His voice? ⸻ Children’s Discussion Questions 1. Before the people could move, what two things did they need to do? (Hint: It has to do with a special table and some special people!) 2. Why do you think God wanted each tribe to give a gift—even if it was the same? • Do you think your gifts and help matter to God? 3. What does it mean to be “clean” before serving God? • Can we clean ourselves, or do we need help? Who helps us? 4. Why did the Levites get “lifted up” and offered to God? • What does that tell us about how special our lives are to God? 5. Who is the Firstborn Son who gave Himself for us? • How can we follow Him this week at home, school, or with our friends?
