This show is dedicated to Carol Felderman and the 100%Kids group. On tonightacirc;euro;trade;s show I focus on critical literacy in a second grade classroom in Virginia. For years, the second grade classes in the school had gone on a trip to the Baltimore Aquarium. It was an excursion children looked forward to as they left first grade and moved into second grade. In fall 2006 this changed as the second graders were told it was too expensive to go on the trip and that they wouldnacirc;euro;trade;t be going. Carol Felderman, a very inspiring and passionate teacher, who youacirc;euro;trade;ve heard from previously on CLIP, had at the time been framing her teaching from a critical literacy perspective so her students were not foreign to problematizing the way things are. As a group they decided to find a way to get the second grade kids to the Baltimore Aquarium. One of the things they first did was to ask for a meeting with the school principal. Encouraged by his openness to their proposals regarding ways to raise funds for the trip, the children moved forward hosting popcorn sales, bingo and pizza nights and so forth. On May 8, 2007, after months of fundraising all the childrenacirc;euro;trade;s hard work paid off as they boarded a bus to the Baltimore Aquarium. Following is audio from the children talking about their trip. This audio is part of a podcast that Carol, her second graders and I have been releasing since the beginning of the year.
