Hey everyone, welcome to mouth therapy and today I want to talk about something that kind of annoys me a lot And it's the recent trend to address things as men and women what I mean by that is using categories to talk about issues And it's not that that's a problem It's that I just saw this podcast for example and to be fair I haven't listened to the podcast, but it's called women belong in the house talking about why I think the snobs This was why we need more women in the White House And there's no problem with that the problem is in the statement That we need more of a category of something in something to me. There is a problem with that and I'm not a big fan of quota I think that at least in the US at one point in time there had to be my quotas were necessary But I think we've come to a point where if someone wants to do something Although there are there is corruption and there are the way things are that doesn't allow for everyone to get everywhere As a whole people kind of we let people go wherever they want to go So to me there's a problem in categorizing like we need more like fucking we need more women superhero to me We need more good superhero characters and if they happen to be women, that's awesome. That's absolutely awesome but We shouldn't we shouldn't just say that we need more of a category because what happens then is that we define like movie characters we define the characters by their categories that doesn't strengthen whatever category you're trying to strengthen Like if you make a female superhero, you're not making a superhero You're making a female superhero. You're not making a person that's flesh now You're making a stereotype what you believe to be a woman into a superhero like Clementine in the walking dead games one of the best characters in in fiction to me at least ever Lee Everett the same same game I Realized after playing the game that the character was black and he deals with racism with some like Like a racist character in the in the story I did not realize that until the end of the of the of the game because the character is just so fucking well written Like everyone that's played this game or watched someone play the game has finished in tears Clementine in the Everett or one of the best characters in fiction ever in my opinion and Why are they good because they were made with the idea of making a good character in mind now the character happened to be black And that played into the story and the way it was woven to the story It's fucking brilliant because it never hammers you over the head with like a fucking message is trying to tell you It has a message is trying to tell you that like racism is bad, which is not a message that anyone disagrees with it's That message is conveyed so subtly because that message was not the focus point of the story and of the character And I think the problem is is that messages like this or the center point of what we want characters to be and that cannot work if you're trying and so For I kind of I kind of want on the tenders about movies But if you if you want to make a movie character make a character Don't make a French person don't make a woman don't make a man make a character and then and I Don't want this to sound like a condescending writing lesson, but this is what I think on this and And To quickly approach I'll probably talk about this later too when we say we hear a lot that we need more women in Some fields the thing that I never hear is that we need more women in like fishing boats We need more women in construction sites and I understand why I don't think we'd be smart to say this But I think their lives kind of the the cul-de-sac where It's it's very selective.
It's needing more women in jobs that are hyping and hey if you're a fucking if you're a woman And you want that fucking job go for it literally I don't think anyone has anything against it That's the thing is no one's against it But there's still this narrative that there's this these people that are against it and don't want women in like STEM But everyone agrees everyone agrees That like if a woman wants to do STEM fucking great get a hyping job You do it if you want if you're a woman you want to be a successful CEO You want to make your startups great? But we hear the problem the problem and this is getting a little bit long. I'm gonna finish it up I think the problem that what I feel the problem is that we hear a narrative that In that infers that there's someone against that narrative and I cannot find anyone apart from maybe extremist groups on the internet Not even that no no I've never found anyone who disagrees with it And I think it's time that we stop pushing this narrative and actually look at the facts look at what actually happens Why are there more men in construction sites and more women as nurses? You know that's one example.
That's one example I'm not saying it means anything But that's one example And once we start looking at the fast we can stop pushing the narrative that we want to push that Like we need more of blank in blank because some people don't want blank in blank or for whatever reason Just fucking be yourself find what you want to do and do it. You want to try something try it You know my little sister wanted to play basketball And she she didn't she didn't want she she didn't want to because only guys played it And she was kind of intimidated and my parents like my other sister and I always said go for it go for it go for it Just if you want to play basketball, it's not the fucking it's not the other boys job to like and like those boys Can't tell you if you can't play basketball you can't even me she won't play basketball you can't get what she did I played basketball and then other girls like followed in her footsteps Great because she wanted to do it. There was no one telling telling my little sister We need more women like we need more girls playing basketball. She wanted to do it So she went for it for it and guess what maybe there's more guys playing basketball than girls But guess what there's nothing wrong with that because if my little sister wants to fucking play basketball She will play basketball, but I don't want her to grow up in a world where She thinks that she has to do something because there's not enough of blanking like I want her to do whatever the fuck she wants But not yeah, okay, I'm gonna sign up because this is getting wrong.
Thank you so much for listening to my friends I hope I was concise enough to communicate my point and I doubt for the few people if if anyone is sitting right now Thank you so much for listening and have a great day
