We Tried To Save The Impaled. Then It Killed The Medics First. | Military Sci-Fi Infantry Story for Sleep

from Military Sci-Fi Story for Sleep

On a brine-flooded industrial platform, the lower galleries and intake tunnels are being colonized by Spinefields, hidden organisms that turn machinery, walls, rungs, and corridors into fields of glassy spines. Sergeant Vasken Kell leads infantry, engineers, medics, and a demoted stretcher bearer into Gallery Seven-B to clear the primary intake pump cluster and restore pressure before zero-four-hundred. The squad descends through pressure locks, checks every surface by touch, and plants charges on the colonized pump housings while corporate command demands the schedule be obeyed. But the Spinefields read the pump rhythm, raise spines when the intake cycle shifts, impale soldiers through sealed armor, and send fragments migrating through bodies toward nerve clusters. This is "The Spinefields" by Sascha Schmidt.
