Wealthy in This Life - Fr. Micah - November 29, 2020

The question that is on the hearts and minds of most Christians is what must we do to be saved? In today’s Gospel lesson from Luke 18:18-27 a certain young ruler asks Jesus this very question saying, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Our Lord instructs him to keep the commandments to which he replies, “All these things I have kept from my youth”. Jesus reminds the young ruler he is still lacking in one thing, so he must sell all his possessions and follow Him. The man became sorrowful, for he was rich and had become a slave to his wealth so strongly that it robbed him of both freedom and an opportunity to follow Christ. Father Micah asks us the questions, “Are we free?” and “What is it that holds us captive?” The answer to these questions is to reflect on that which we love and to know that true love is in giving and sacrifice. Filled with the Holy Spirit the Saints measured success different that the world not in taking but in giving. Each of us should look at own imperfections accepting our sinfulness but without losing hope that Christ loves us and by offering Him our imperfections He might give us the Grace to find perfection. If we desire Christ above everything else, he will set us free and we will find ourselves wealthy beyond the heavens and in this life.
