Webinar #162 Dr Nick Land - Who decides who we are - Thinking about self and identity

from ICMDA Recordings · host ICMDA

Recorded on 17 August 2023 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Nick Land. Who, or what, decides who we are? Is it our genes, our biology, is it our society, our education, our upbringing, our culture, is it God? Identity has become a major source of conflict and controversy in Western society. Many of us have been engaged in discussions over sexuality and gender but there is a risk that if we limit ourselves to this we will fail to see the wider changes in the way Western Society understands identity. This webinar will look at the corrosion caused to ethics and civic society by the rise of expressive individualism as the West’s way of defining self. Dr Nick Land is a psychiatrist, a retired medical director, an Anglican Reader (Lay Preacher), Lay Chair of the Diocese of York and a previous chair of Christian Medical Fellowship.

Song Against Songs, The by G. K. Chesterton (1874 - 1936) LibriVox LibriVox volunteers bring you 9 recordings of The Song Against Songs by G. K. Chesterton. This was the Fortnightly Poetry project for October 16, 2011.Chesterton was a large man, standing 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m) and weighing around 21 stone (130 kg; 290 lb). His girth gave rise to a famous anecdote. During World War I a lady in London asked why he was not 'out at the Front'; he replied, 'If you go round to the side, you will see that I am.' On another occasion he remarked to his friend George Bernard Shaw: "To look at you, anyone would think a famine had struck England". Shaw retorted, "To look at you, anyone would think you have caused it". P. G. Wodehouse once described a very loud crash as "a sound like Chesterton falling onto a sheet of tin."( Summary from Wikipedia ) Summer 2011 | Public lectures and events | Video London School of Economics and Political Science Video files from LSE's summer 2011 programme of public lectures and events, for more recordings and pdf documents see the corresponding audio collection.
