He left the UK in 1997 to run a TB control programme at a mission hospital in Bangladesh. Expecting to stay for 3-5 years he and his wife Teresa, a GP, stayed for 15 years. For the last 5 years he worked at icddr,b – an international public health research centre – running their hospitals and getting used to managing cholera and other epidemics. This didn’t seem particularly relevant to UK practice at the time . . . and then covid happened! He returned to the UK in 2012. For 6 years he was the Director of Public Health for South Gloucestershire. He discovered Acute Medicine as a speciality working in Gloucester and Cheltenham, initially part time.
