Prof Chris Lavy gives an overview of paediatric orthopaedic surgical needs in sub-Saharan Africa and the key pathologies which fall into the four categories of: congenital, infective, developmental and trauma. The evidence base for the burden of disease will be considered. The second part of the talk looks at how such a great burden of conditions can be treated and will cover the set up of dedicated training institutions such as COSECSA, and the building of facilities in conjunction with ministries of health and mission health services. We also consider future needs and how clinicians can cooperate globally.
