Originally written November 2, 2011 posted here: https://forthesakeofthetruth.com/2011/11/02/wednesday-word-study-law/LawTransliteration: nomos Phonetic Spelling: (nom'-os) Short Definition: a law, the Mosaic Law Definition: usage, custom, law; in NT: of law in general, plur: of divine laws; of a force or influence impelling to action; of the Mosaic law; meton: of the books which contain the law, the Pentateuch, the Old Testament scriptures in general.3551 nómos – law. 3551 (nómos) is used of: a) the Law (Scripture), with emphasis on the first five books of Scripture; or b) any system of religious thinking (theology), especially when nomos occurs without the Greek definite article. On Monday, we looked at the verse:Hebrews 8:1010) FOR THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAELAFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD:I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR MINDS,AND I WILL WRITE THEM ON THEIR HEARTS.AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD,AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE. This verse says that in the New Covenant God will write His laws onto our minds and hearts. So I looked up that specific word, law, in verse 10, which you see above. I particularly like the part, ‘any system of religious thinking (theology)’.In the next verse, verse 11:11 “AND THEY SHALL NOT TEACH EVERYONE HIS FELLOW CITIZEN,AND EVERYONE HIS BROTHER, SAYING, ‘KNOW THE LORD,’FOR ALL WILL KNOW ME,FROM THE LEAST TO THE GREATEST OF THEM. In America, the land of religious freedom, we have many churches in almost every city. From the time most people are taught about the bible, they are in some church somewhere being taught. Each church has a particular slant on its view of what the law (theology) is, and that is what they teach to their young and old alike.I’m going to make a very bold statement here. Theology should not be taught in churches, or anywhere else for that matter. For every brand of church and cult, for that matter, there is a theology. We get so anchored into theology that is learned/taught that it clutters our minds to the truth. If you have recovered from my last statement, let me go on to say that what we should share with our young is the undiluted grace of God and His enormous love for us. We should teach them that once we have become His, have given Him our life and become His child, He will then at that moment write upon our hearts His theology. We should teach our young that once God has written this upon their hearts, then they should seek to follow the Holy Spirit in all things.I can almost see the hair on the backs of your necks rising in fear over this. Why? Because it takes control out of our hands and places it in God’s hands. But how can we trust they will do the right thing if we just tell them willy-nilly to follow what God has placed on their hearts? Because God says so. That is faith: following Him blindly wherever He leads. And you know… they won’t always do the right thing. But even those who are taught don’t always do the right thing. So wouldn’t it be better to teach them from the beginning about our helper who was placed on this earth to lead and guide them in every area? Teach them how to listen for that inner still small voice to lead them. Teach them about peace and following God’s peace on a case-by-case basis. But what if what’s on their heart is not good? Then they aren’t true Christians, but counterfeits, and they need a heart conversion, not an outward modification.Today, my challenge to you is this…De-clutter your mind from all the old teaching and theology that has been taught to you from a very young age and learn to listed inwardly to your heart. To the God theology that He has placed on your heart. He will lead you to the right place. His desire is to free you.
