The underdog is howling This is Stanford Steve and the bear. Oh, yes a home team getting points. What's better than that? Alright week four Good week last week for us three and three felt like I left a lot of meat on the bone though.
That's what we force for exactly got that Just some housekeeping you'll be out in Eugene. I want to get some travel To throw out No pun, but that's the bear of the college game. They've got some scenarios that we'll get into later I'm sure everybody's dying it home to find out about what my weekend travels are I got I'd say five picks. I got a couple leans.
I think I want to ask you about two at the end of this But I want to I want to bring in our guest this week It's Bruce Feldman who covers the sport better than anybody. I know he's been a friend for a large for a long time Welcome in Bruce Feldman. You read him on the athletic you see him on Fox on Saturdays on the sideline Most likely where there's thunderstorms expected With that being said he is in Austin. I was there last week and we dodged a thunderstorm So uh, Bruce first of all welcome in and second of all bring your range jacket I'm very excited about this podcast.
I feel like I made a big time now. I got two homegrown iconic college football guys Can't beat that and I will probably drag out the bad weather because that seems to happen when our crew gets out there Uh love your crew actually think I've told you plenty of times. I think you are the a crew there Um people get mad at me when I say that but I that's what I feel You can enjoy Davis will not get mad when you say that please make sure you tell them that all right I can't get to those guys those guys are two two big time. Uh numbers not allowed Um, we will get to your turkey burger portion of the podcast a little bit later as that's been making the rounds with your love Of of the of the burgers of turkey, but let's dive um right into it You you've been a voice You know, obviously when you work back here and you know our favorite guy always, you know when it comes down to writing and coaching and All the inside, you know scoops of the sport, but with you living on the west coast I don't want this to make this east versus west and you know, you know the the narrative about us Supposing people back here in bristle.
But when I look at the latest AP poll You know, I look at Auburn losing, you know dropping two spots as they lose as a 10 point favorite at home As opposed to looking at Washington what happens when they lose to Auburn and they dropped I think it was 10 spots But allies this week will be on Oregon Stanford It's two pack 12 north teams when you look at the pack 12, especially the north right now as a whole Do you think these teams are getting credit for how good they are? Not really, but look I've been blessed with other doctors for almost 20 years and there's a reason why it is I mean they were awful in the bowls last year when your flagship school Which has been USC when they get drilled by Alabama when they get embarrassed by another day When they play like they did against Ohio State in the in the in the big bowl last winter I think when those things happen head to head when it's your flagship school and you have all these other like a little You know, it's separate match-ups that that happened in addition to the bowl uh record your credibility is hard to build back up They desperately needed Washington to go across the country and be Auburn now. They weren't embarrassing that game They didn't win it and I just think when you see USC struggling you see some of these other other things that happen It's hard for people to buy back in it. Just it just is and it's one game is not going to do it But they need some good things to happen and I I think right now I think Oregon has some talent.
I love Justin Herbert, but I don't know what to make of them yet I mean we got your alma mater against USC and I was impressed by what I saw from Stanford I think they're a really good team, but really good. You know a really good team versus You know what it is in the SEC where I feel like there might be five teams that could be as good If not better than the best team in the pack 12 Uh, that's tough. I mean it's just tough to work around all that You mentioned Washington. I was actually real coming off the Auburn game I was like, you know what?
They probably should very easily could have won that game and I'm like, you know what? They'll get better from here on out I would if I'm a Washington fan or a packed well I would be concerned after watching that performance in Salt Lake I know it's a hard place to play and Utah's a good defense, but there's something going on offensively that they just don't look right Yeah, you know, I'm gonna get thrown analogy at you I'm curious what you think just because we're both Miami guys And I feel a lot like Jake Browning kind of reminds me of Ken Dorsey where he does it You know, he's a smart guy people respond to him as a leader He was really good as a sophomore and I'm not sure how much better he got from there You know, and he obviously didn't have much of an NFL career I don't know if people look at Jake Browning as as much of an NFL guy arm strength wise and everything But you look and you just see he definitely I don't feel like he's made significant strides. He's a good quarterback. He's very good But they have young receivers around him the offensive line You know seems like he's banged up And I thought they would have been better.
We have them next week home against BYU I mean, I still think they're the best team in the packed well But I don't think I thought they were a team that was ready to make some noise in the playoffs And I just don't see it. I mean, I think they're very good I think they're really well coached, but I just don't know if they have enough firepower To really challenge great teams And the team in the north that a lot of people think could challenge them Oregon since Marcus Marriota left They're 13 and 14 in the packed well eaten six in Austin three and eight versus ranked teams They're a home under dog this week against ranked Stanford You are going to be in Austin where there's an unranked team Unranked home dog against the ranked team. They're nine of them on Saturday I'm gonna include Virginia Tech and Old Dominion just because I have to but you got Michigan State and Indiana Notre Dame at Wake DC with Texas where you'll be mrs B state of Kentucky Clemson Georgia Tech Georgia, Missouri was constant Iowa BC Purdue I'm gonna set the over under at two and a half of those Road teams road ranked teams to unranked team lose outright you going over two and a half or under two and a half I'm gonna one pick I like really quite a bit out of that and that's wake forest and knock off Notre Dame I know that you know wake forest BC quarterback looked phenomenal last week wake forest is shaky on defense I do like what they there's a lot first of all there's a lot of familiarity in those staff Because the Brian Kelly's got some defensive coordinators last couple years both both from my telephone now when he has now We'll wait for us guys. I think that Wake forest is big issue is they're not really good against the past.
We saw that I'm not sure how good Brandon wind was shit. I know he got a strong arm and it was smart He can run but he's just so inconsistent one touchdown for fix so far And if you look at what he did last your home versus road His td interception ratio in south end was really good at home and really bad on the road So I think wake wake forest has a good chance to knock them off the rest of the way I mean, I was constant feels after last we feel a lot more manageable. I could see like I keep waiting for perdue to To rise up and it hasn't happened just yet, but I don't think I think they can play would be see certainly and so if you're giving me like two other upsets in addition to the wake forest one I mean my game You know tc just played a really talented ios state team there could be a hangover effect from that You know and kentucky is a lot better than they've been in the last few years of playing with confidence I mean I don't think they're gonna be miss a beast. I think you're really good Yeah, I feel good.
I'm not picking Georgia type 2 p-colons or anything like that You know, but I can see I could see four four of those nine happening. Yeah, I agree with you I want to go back to a team that you saw earlier this year and that's Oklahoma and I'm not afraid to admit like I was totally wrong like I didn't think it would be this easy I know they haven't played the best competition, but I look at how smooth they made the first two weeks look and then to go in a really tough Place I think you know in names and and do that and put up what they did I'm I'm I'm I know what else to say about Oklahoma like they've blown me away and how easy they've made it look Do you think I just two-part I'll go I want to ask you about Lincoln Riley in the second half But do you think they have an easier path through the big 12 this year than they did last year? I don't be clearly where the path has to go two best teams in the big 12 or West Virginia Do I really like you see you and they gotta go both of them And they gotta go to West Virginia late in the year I think that's asking a lot now look to me West Virginia if they you could say this about a lot of teams They have to stay healthy at West Virginia. It is critical that like I feel like whatever your you know For whatever that baseball term is like if something happens to a career It's really bad and if they lose one of those two great tackles It's a real problem or if David long goes out again, you know something like that I think West Virginia is gonna have a big drop off where a lot of other teams maybe could survive it a little better But to me that's the issue when you look at and I've done a bunch of oh you games over the years They definitely have more than their share athletes on defense for some reason.
This is the first time it looks like they do Yeah, that's exactly what I feel when I watch them like wow they're tackling in open field like they can do it But when you I mean you talked to more than you know and you talked to more people than anybody NFL and college like You know you heard stuff about you know stoops You know not having a problem, you know hand it off the Lincoln Riley and then like as a success goes You know that's what happens nowadays like all the other people come out, you know about I knew he was gonna be this You know back when he was this and you know wasn't he at East Carolina at one point was yeah Yeah, Robin McNeil brought him with him after you know He got to be leech late got to be Texas Tech's office for well But we stuff happened in the bowl game beach setting Michigan State and then Robin McNeil brings him with him And he's just weight he's you know at the time he was 26 going on 46 Yeah, that's just how he is and like you would have to like when you talk about the next you know at the NFL level Like I look at what Pat Mahomes is doing with the Chiefs like wouldn't Lincoln Riley be at the top of your list if you're not a Feltine looking for a coach Yeah, I definitely think so he is so smart and when I see some of the stuff that that not only what you just mentioned with Kansas City what's going on out here with the RAM Yeah, I mean he's just very confident play call it when he got the job But oh you remember a lot of people who are OU people were like not happy about it because they look and go He's just gonna run the leech stuff and he's got two great running backs And he's not gonna feed him enough and you're gonna see him just you know Like it's gonna be designed run and how much is he actually where bakers taken off those are gonna count as runs when it really not Runs and I feel like it was it took a while to last her for people to buy and go okay I get it this guy is way smarter than we thought he's not Mike leech He's you know, he's on he's a kind of a Mike leech 2.0 without all the non without a lot of crazy stuff that goes in So yeah, he's really smart I think there's a handful of guys who now that the NFL seems to be kind of branching out a little more open to some of the college Elements where I could see guys You know Jeff Ramas another one I could see that I'm surprised you know I thought look that he's not winning a bunch of games this year But I just think these guys are really really smart offensive offensive creative guys and Lincoln is to me at the top of the list There and my favorite thing about Lincoln is that you'll never let you know how smart he is like you mentioned smart Like eight times there and like the way he is you never get it until you just you know You keep talking to him and you just watch what he does and then obviously the team with success We have is majorly due to his smarts, which is just thing. I love that He doesn't talk about himself What's what's worth noting is you talk to any of the old leech guys who you know We're 30 to 34 whether it was sunny guys who then a holder center you know claim a buyer whoever they were there and Lincoln with the student assistant and everybody knew he was really smart and Maybe they didn't always love that about having that guy They didn't necessarily trusted it or whatever and he is very self-aware and I think he has matured a lot in that regard of You know what? I may not have always handled things the right way by speaking up when I was the 21 year old like you know I mean not the probably not the right way to do it We all knew probably people we worked with in other facets of life when they were 22 and right out of school And they were might have been a little too smart for their own good people didn't always love it But those a lot of those people ended up you know being really good in their careers I think Lincoln has has as the self-awareness and the smarts and the maturity to kind of finesse some of that stuff And now I think we're seeing something at the end product And that's why I bought stutes and jokes today Oh, we're so comfortable with them the team at B. Dokellum in the Rose Bowl last year Georgia number two in the polls right now Alabama number one I know we have two months left to play But I'm sitting here.
I can kind of see the tea leaves lining up and I see a real good chance. We have number one Alabama 12 and 0 number two Georgia 12 and 0 SEC championship game and a scenario We're both teams make the play off again. Is that something that you could up potentially see as well? Yeah, I just think everything is kind of it looks that way I mean, they're so they're built in similar images I think from is it looks really good now people there can say okay Well, they're not quite as good as they were last year because they don't have to running back to that level where actually I guess you know the one of them still there I think that when you look and say okay Well the schedule is very very manageable and how that helps that they can kind of develop by the time to get to have to go to LSU And where they're gonna play a really nasty defense Maybe they miss Ropon Smith a little bit.
I mean, he's a great player But who's gonna touch that so they get to Alabama? I'm not sure anybody will and I don't think what we've seen from from Kirby Smart and Mel Tucker's Ethan Porter They've kind of been able to be vanilla and some of the stuff They've done at this point maybe they can you know unload it the other thing that's on that I feel like it vastly underrated with them They're kicking game is phenomenal. Yeah, and you know, I think getting close games. We're gonna we're gonna see that So I think they're really well positioned.
I am curious to see what happens this weekend just because You know, they could snuff out a lot of what what what much I wanted to do at South Carolina a couple of weeks You go they're gonna face a really good quarterback this weekend with good tight end and good receivers And I don't think mazoo can hang with them for four quarters But they could test them in a way that I don't think South Carolina maybe is is wired to do Again, I'm not picking this to be close to a upset right now But I just think we may find out a little bit more about Georgia, which is which is a good thing But everything I've seen I mean, I've been so impressed with how you know what they've done there Especially you know, especially with offense with Jim Cheney and and and Sam Pitt and helping Kirby smart out I think they have a real good identity what they're doing at J from keeps impressive me You're right. I said this numerous times that field goal by Rod Blankenship last year and overtime was the biggest clutch kick That is completely forgotten about bad stat and just absolutely drilled it So I'm gonna get everybody forgets that kick Georgia Alabama both have to go to LSU You know it was wrong very very well We said at the time It made this just seems maybe so crazy that it might actually work two wins away from home over top 10 teams Are we still buying LSU or at some point? Are they gonna have to be better than a hundred and twenty eighth in the country in completion percentage in a hundred and eleven in the country in Total yards is ultimately their offense gonna have to make some plays here Well, but you know look we're gonna measure their stat they played two and best defense in the country It's not like there's a bunch of teams that have had your stat games all three weeks They haven't I think a big piece for them And this is I don't know how much they can keep this along is no turnovers So when you have you know, I talked to Ojron on Sunday morning He was like when you got I'm not gonna imitate him But when you got you know a great kicker great defense and a really smart quarterback and a lot of heart You've got a friggin chance and he's right I think what people probably didn't give him an up credit for is when you look at recruiting rankings, you know, whatever whoever does it Whether super seven or ESPN or rivals or whoever on signing day They only consider the the high school and JC guys What you never fact during is and you guys count that take up scholarships and the grad transfers the transfers and some of those and they took a bunch of Them and those guys whether the kicker from Worcester or or or Terrence Alexander who came from from your alma mater or certainly Joe burrow Those guys have an integral pieces they make it them better I mean they have seven new starters on the offense who were not there when less miles was there and I think they responded Well, but they're gonna have three games in a row where they get they get superpowers coming into into Baton Rouge If they win one of those three, I think it's a big plus I think this team I said this you know in the summer I think they were a year away from legitimately competing to be a playoff team because I think they'll be really good right now I don't think they have enough firepower on offense Joe burrow is a more athletic version of Danny at length and that's not necessarily a bad thing But he doesn't have various guys. He's a pretty good running guy behind him in Nick Rose said He doesn't have a great take the game over running back whether it's guys for for net I do think as long as you have Dave or Andrew they're gonna be in a lot of games the question's gonna be whether they get you know Any one of these three quarterbacks jig-rom to a Nick that's Gerald is there defense gonna be able to force them into enough mistakes?
I think they got to meet all those teams are bar are just more efficient and more dangerous and more explosive on offense right now We need to see some one of these young receivers for LSU step up and be a real difference maker right now I think they're gonna grind people out and they can do that for the most part I don't think they can win all you know every game or five of the six against you know big big team They haven't it wouldn't shock me also if they stumbled somewhere along the way whether it was whether it was Florida or Miss I'm at Florida. I don't think LSU's margin for error back late right now because of the way they're playing So they can stumble at one of those teams before they get there a couple things on coach Obviously you you wrote the book to me market with you know when he was at Ole Miss and You know you wrote about LSU this week and I think he doesn't get enough credit for for trusting himself and like you talked about this week on your podcast audible with Suman del and You know he he trusts his evaluation process and that's huge man Like that's awesome that he has a confidence in it no matter any and that just shows he doesn't care what everyone else says about him But I will ask when you decide either text or call coach Oh, we know he's the king of saying the most with the least amount of words so that our is conversation shorter Are his responses on text shorter? No the conversation and both The most time around oh my god 5 minutes and an hour or five whereas Edo's around you will get a bunch of stuff But it never lasts longer than the time I leave my house to turn the car on you know it'll be rapid fire Sunday morning I'm stuck with some some travel issues and I get a phone call and I pick up the phone without saying hello and it was just I got a team and it was like You know yeah, I know what he was talking telling that security guard when he was walking a check in Yes, that's the conversation I want to know like if we could ever have a lip reader on that one man That would be phenomenal because that guy's looking at him like whoa There's a story like I don't want to get too far down go please Then I before they're playing LSU and this is when they are they are in the weeds I mean there are three and eight kind of team or whatever four and eight and four and seven and and he has parade Jerry Who was the first time pick? I don't think I don't think it's fun in the NFL But probably where the last guy in the world you want to mess with you know whatever just he was a strong as a bowl Defensive tackle and he brings parade up to the front of the defensive room and he's kind of like tell us talk to him The story like okay, where's this going?
I'm in the back of the room and he's like, you know, you're the you're the little brother for a big brother And if Raya wants to lean on him and for a kind of leaning on him And that's a big dude is probably still benches 315 a couple times and he probably still does it you know like once a week anyway He's like right me on me and he's like Ray's leaning on him and he goes you know, she's a little brother You're the little brother and he's pushing the button and then the next thing I know and then also one day you go Not today and he just jacks parade Jerry up the whole room. Oh my god, which just happened and you know I think it just it adds him where it's like I could I think when people didn't give him a ton of credit The thing they don't realize is how good of a motivator. He is I saw that USC. Oh, yeah I mean, you know like they played your arm of mine David Shaw's team was four in the country there was a celebrity Exactly and chose well and so they end up they end up they had one sub on the whole game I mean, this is the most visible team on the west coast that you're gonna play and they had one sub for the entire game And they beat a really good team who and they didn't have much depth and it was like, okay This guy can get you know, and this is why I think they may not they probably won't cover the spread against this weekend So Louisiana Tech when they are getting focused in and locked in and it's a big opponent I nothing surprised me that they could go toe to toe with some team way more talented or way deeper than them because I've seen how He can get guys fired up.
It's it's an underrated skill And I'm not sure how much you'd see like I don't think you're gonna see the whole camera in there for what you get from him Like the all-access would be fascinating though. Yeah, keep your eyes on the network for that. Yeah, all right So you mentioned and everyone you know, you wrote the book with leech you wrote the book with with coach. Oh Before we let you go here.
I wanted to do this like bracket style. All right. I want to get this out there Okay, you and I when ever we're in the same time we try and get together for a meal, you know beverage But you have you know, you like myself. We'd love to sit down and talk with these coaches So I want this format.
Okay, you get to pick the four one seeds All right of college football head coaches to go have a beer with so I call that like drink ability like they get you know Obviously, they're gonna have a beer. They're gonna have some good stories, but not you know It's gonna be the best time possible. So you get four one seeds. Who would you think?
To me data hold for says my Alabama on this deal. No question, you know, it's it's never gonna be it's gonna be honest and blunt and funny and You know, whatever he's a he's the no-brainer Bears favorite pack 12 coaches also be a one seed out here Mr. Kelly, I think yeah He's got he's got awesome stories. He is his perception You get to see little bits of it in the press conferences of his sense of humor like I've already said after losing to Oklahoma I mean, yeah, he blamed Yeah, I mean he's awesome with that stuff definitely him You know feel a little bit on this if you still hear That was gonna be my answer.
I was gonna say it has to be a current Very interesting to me and I've been around with some of these packed 12 events as Chris Peterson I think that would surprise people because he's like a he's a deep thinker and he's interesting He's got some good stories and he's kind of got a really dry sense of humor much like health rich was yes Like they're very underrated socially like people are like Mark offers way funnier than I thought you would never show that But as a one seed no no no as a one seed, you know who is crazy In a kind of good way Nick Rolovich. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I wanted one of power five.
Sorry. Yeah, I don't know if Nick Rolovich is Florida Gold Coast when it comes to By the way, they're actually really improved this year. I just found out that army that army game on Saturday I thought they'd go east and get well with it. They played great Yeah, and look I mean I think going back this is a lot of the track But I remember when he loses his grad transfer his quarterback to Oklahoma State Drew Brown Yeah, like a couple of weeks before that he walked another quarterback Because that kid thought Drew Brown was gonna be there and he was a both rub out of a third or whatever and then also he was both of them And now Cole McDonald I don't know if it's numbers You're still like 14 and oh or whatever You know TD interception is pretty insane and that guy's a really good coach He's quirky and funny and you know, he's a kind of nutty on social media, but that's all a good thing You know Tom Herman very kind of uh, I don't know I would be tempted to put Tom Herman in this mix.
Yep. I think he's he's got a loose cannon Okay, I'm gonna loose cannon and I've seen a little that I've never been or I've never had beer like Gandhi So I don't know I think he would be high on the list. Um, you know, he's got a good story. He's do is g-pack Gary Patterson's got some really cool interests off the field.
He does the beer's part is separate though Like he's he's he's entertaining We are coaches meetings with him are for head coach like the coordinator Who's probably the most entertaining and the most one is David Gibbs from from Texas Tech He will give you a you know like but for head coach G people all over the all over the map is good I What about Kings Kingsbury for the lady's factor? Oh for what he might bring to the good point Hey, come on. You gotta stick outside the box there. I know James Franklin will talk to it to a person that's passed out I think um, you know, I would put up high on this list is Narduzzi.
Okay. He's another one. Okay pretty much brutal brutally honest So you'll get you got the world according to Pat and that's okay The pension a game a couple weeks ago that I was that was a fun week of practice. Yes Yeah, so many guys I would be curious about if I've never seen them really let their guard down like your guys got lost I like a lot and I think he's really smart.
I've I personally never you know I think I was around him one night like in Matty bigger buddies and I was after a game Maybe but I really have never kind of you know, I've never really seen seen him kind of let his guard down a little bit So I can't say that about cuckoo for Snyder. No, sorry I mean, I think they're great coaches, but no, that's like I don't have my club. I don't have that club in my bag What about brom I like brom brom funny, you know, I thought he would you know, it's like one of those where I don't know He would become the one see you know like your more head is another one I would buy list I mean the real Joe more is the reason why I view the word serendipitous for the first time I like in the last year because of him like it's like you get smarter when you talk to him, you know, when you talk to him But when it comes to like top 10 school like I would again I was a Peterson in there. Yep, because I've seen that side of him.
I don't know you have a lot of respect for David Shaw and everything I just don't know how much different he is if you know, I signed next to my dinners before and You know, it's like to me the Dana part I really like because you get to you know, it's not always it's certainly not PG You know, it's just kind of like this is who he is and I think you know, it's entertaining and you'll come away with stories When I when I've had these chip lids out here when I've had these these you know over food or whatever you you You learn about a ton of stuff. You know his mind is going in places that just are he's just different So I mean I just think he's so much of a you know, he's got a lot of perspective on things and it becomes a smaller world So I put him up there, but if I had to go for I would go I would go Dana. I would go Chip Kelly I would go Chris Peterson and I would either go Narduzi or Joe Morehead, okay All right, we got it done for one season and maybe down the road we work on the two seats Yeah, you might need another podcast for that. Yeah, exactly.

I'm sure they're sick of hearing about it And I feel like they have more to prove Herbert and play against Stanford last year Stanford's coming in make what you want about the Bryce love thing sat out last week They look putrid on offense without him in the first half against Davis I don't think they've looked good on offense at all early this year and it has to do with the with the combinations of guys up Front they didn't have their center. He's back and now but the issue with Stanford is the idea of how teams are going to try and defend love in that Ground game and the way Stanford does is that you know It's we can just say you know they count the box all right and San Diego state did a great job as they do They're very advanced defensively with the schemes they run and trying to you know disguise stuff and they got Stanford a lot I mean obviously our state white side of the huge night throwing the Costello That's he stuffed them.
I mean Bryce had one long run or two long runs and got himself over a hundred I just don't like what I've seen from the Stanford offense Especially up front and now to go on the road and one of the best it's gonna be the best atmosphere of Saturday in the sport Awesome, saying in Saturday night There's no question and I just don't think Stanford has the goods to score enough against them I mean the defense has been great, but they're getting back to what Stanford has been defensively if you take out last year They're they're more improved But I just look at Oregon and the the opportunity they have here and I look at Stanford in a huge spot because for them Also is they go here and then they go to South Bend next week and then they coach Utah But I think Stanford to two point favorite. I really like Oregon to win this game and open up or it's moving Orga open up like one one and a half and it's come across we hit on it with Bruce I've said if Oregon is going to be that pack 12 North contender that a lot of people expected them and both that they could be this year This is a game. I have to win 13 and 14 since Mario left Eugene in packed 12 games only eight and six and home They lost six home games in the previous eight or nine years Pre- and eight versus ranked teams now you have number 17 in the country on your home field after getting embarrassed by them last couple years If they're going to make that leap You're right. They're at home. We all like rule as a head coach and like is Kansas like is this are they gonna win like four Five games because I mean I'm looking at Baylor. I got away. They ain't right I get the sense that Kansas is kind of that underdog with fleas this week Didn't work out too well for South Carolina couple weeks ago didn't work out for Hawaii last week either That's and that's what that's naked.
I Just think Baylor is gonna be all in for this one. So I would lean towards Baylor That's a game. I'm kind of ticked off about that I missed last week like cucklaff as that as a dog like that.
