It helps to pinstakes back to being Penn State You know, and obviously they went away there for a while, but that's that 16 game to me against Ohio State got them back to kind of being the program that we're now accustomed to seeing and and When they're ranked in the top 10 and they bring in an opponent in the top 10 You're not gonna find a better more intimidating more involved fan base for 60 minutes than the whiteout at State College Yeah, it's it sets itself apart. It's just got its own flavor that only they can do when you look on the field I'm watching Penn State last week and I was just surprised by seeing so many of them Like sorely runs like I thought they would just try and you know put it up and just get out of you know Champagne were to win and on the flip side you look at Ohio State secondary who really looks green to me still You know, especially against TCU or there were some mix ups that looked to me And I'm not trying to get anything away from TCU But do you feel Penn State thinks they have a pretty a good advantage, you know what their offense against that secondary of Ohio State?
Well, you know, I think Penn State's offense because because of the style of offense that they run and it's incredibly complicated When you throw in trace McSorley who's like a point guard, you know, he's making a lot of split-second decisions whether it's run Or run the pass or pass or run a lot of different things can happen based on excuse me What the defense is doing to him and the guy's been around now for three years He's been there and done that and he's very similar to Baker Mayfield last year I'm not comparing him physically to him But I'm just saying that kind of the straw that mixes the drink that the intangibles having the answer and extension from the offensive staff out Under the field. He's basically a coordinator out there So when you throw that in and you throw in miles Sanders, so we knew about last year He just didn't get an opportunity with Sequin and the young receivers are starting to emerge I tell you it's it's if you're a Penn State fan. There's a lot to be excited about And while Ohio State is still somewhat you said young in the secondary I think they're front even without Nick Bosa is to me gonna be a big factor in this game because they trademark Jones and Chase Young and Robert Landers Those guys are difference makers on any defensive line And I think Draymond Jones will be the guy that you'll see used in a variety of ways now with Bosa out I think you'll see him bounce around from defense attack old and nose to defensive end and They're gonna have to keep an eye on 86 because he can wreck some things for anybody But yeah, it's there's a lot to be excited about and if Ohio State doesn't get after me sorely with that defensive line Then it'll be it'll be a challenge this long down and most people think this will be a high scoring game I would shock to see the total is up over 70 in this one another thing that most people I think are putting that put in there And in case the two will win the Heisman Alabama will win the national championship But if you look if you look at Haskins numbers and if you look at McSorley right now to it is minus 150 To when I was drove he can get has to plus 500 and trace McSorley is plus 25 is 25 to 1 I would think that Haskins right now even if I have to one and McSorley at 25 to one We would be the winner of this game is gonna get some major run for class We think you know who I picked in August I picked trace McSorley and I picked Penn State to win the big ten and actually going to the playoff and it had everything to do with This game, you know preseason and if he's sitting there 25 to one If this buddy is way if we talk next week and they win this game and in order to win this game He's gonna have to play his tail off And if he plays well and that big a stage and all of a sudden It's gonna be toa and then they're gonna be talking about trace McSorley is that who's the other guy It'll be trace McSorley if Penn State wins this game because they're not gonna win without him being a big factor in the game So that's incredible to realize I know he was at 25 to one That's that's something you'd wanna if you're interested in that kind of thing you might you might want to sniff that one out You know how to work those numbers. Yeah, yeah, but bear you're right about doing hasskins I mean he finally I think because the OU army game didn't necessarily go the way people thought and Colomerina necessarily I mean he took advantage of the possessions that he had he just never had the ball But I think it needs to be said that the Wayne hasskins right now outside of Justin Herbert is throwing the ball with velocity and accuracy As well as anybody and now here's the thing TCU game It was a Jerry Jones stadium down at Arlington.
Yeah, it was 70% Ohio State fans Like they've never been tested in this kind of atmosphere until Saturday night And they might pass with flying colors and we might go holy cow doing haskins as a monster or we might go Oh, that's what happens when you go on the road one or the other will happen And if I will tell you this if they don't pressure him and that crowds not affecting that offensive line and he's sitting back there With his feet set you're not gonna stop him from making huge yards in the passing game So much like what we talked about with McSorley trying to get him out of rhythm Penn State with that home field the white out feeding off of that energy the boys up front from Penn State better find a way to kind of Get after asking them get him off his point or he's gonna put up crazy numbers one team that was challenged on the road a couple weeks ago down at Cal Field Clemson when it got down to The winning time we saw Kelly Bryan in the game there for Clemson the news today of course Kelly Bryant will transfer from Clemson It's just it's interesting to me how the narrative going into the year was Oh, there's no way to in jail and hurts can in coexist on the same roster one of those guys will absolutely be gone But Kelly Bryan Trevor Lawrence, and they'll figure it out. They'll be okay They'll be on the roster so whoever had Kelly Bryan being the guy to transfer I think you win a prize, but this this really affects Clemson I think I mean they you never want to see an injury, but but God forbid something happens to Trevor Lawrence now Clemson I don't know if they win the easy see if they have to go to a backup now Yeah, yeah, so that's a big hit I'd say what's incredible is we sit here four weeks into the season and everybody talks about the red shirt rule and all that Who would have thought because we all knew that Georgia had Justin Fields and of course Jake from and Clemson had Trevor Lawrence coming in They said could be as good as the Sean Watson if not better So you knew that that was gonna be an interesting situation and then of course to and Jalen who would have ever thought that we'd be here in Two and a quarterbacks of the four teams that took their team into the playoff last year are not necessarily You know playing poorly. They've just been replaced by players who were playing better Yeah, and man that I mean you just have a good year last year you got the grand prize You got all the way to the playoffs and in Jalen's case back to back I mean he went to the national championship He led him to the national championship games back to back years his first and second year and And you know I'm not saying to it shouldn't be the guy because I said before the season started he should be so it's not about that And even with Trevor Lawrence. I mean there's a lot to like there this guy if you look at him physically and what he throws the ball It's just effortless.
I mean you get with Dab on his Fc, but I was not a huge Kelly Bryant guy last year I thought he was a stop gap guy. I thought once this Trevor Lawrence comes in You know that I think that for them to go where they need to go They need a guy who can make the throws and the Alabama game last year It was obvious that they just weren't getting it done there Then the A&M game happened and I walked out of that game and Baron I were there We called that game and I thought boy Kelly Bryant has really improved and looks different than he did a year ago Which most guys naturally do but he's reading coverage he's standing right in front of that crowd hostile environment A&M building momentum and making a comeback They're ready to try to pull off a major upset They go back to the bullpen bring Kelly Bryan out and he delivers and played incredibly well And I thought maybe maybe he held on to his job And here we are two weeks later and Trevor Lawrence after starting in Georgia Tech has done enough and And then his reaction where instead of saying you know what I'm a Clemson Tiger I don't agree with it, you know, but instead he's out and you know He's he's gonna I guess Richard and try to transfer and go play somewhere else So it's frustrating different just a different world we live in right now in college room long especially when it comes to that position It's very very different. It's crazy too I was rooting for Bryant too because he went there knowing that he was gonna sit behind Watson He was one of these few guys that did put in his time And that's what just it just makes it sad man because it's it's becoming an epidemic in the sport and it's just not fun stuff Um quickly as a player this week, which what do you think is more annoying urban urban? You know focusing on the special teams this week or Nick Saban down in P town preaching complacency is all Lafayette comes in You know, I think the latter I think If I were an Alabama player, I would dread these weeks I see I look at the schedule and I'd be like oh my god We are dead Everyone else any outside's like oh you guys got a week off and internally they're like oh my gosh He's gonna take it to a whole different level this week So he doesn't do well with these these games and being up by you know 28 at the end of the first quarter I mean you'll you'll see more hostility from him this week than you will the rest of the year combined Yeah, I would definitely say coach Saban who incidentally Ian and I are gonna have on this week on our podcast Which should be good to hear what he's up to this week.

Yeah, they're they're they're really heading in a good direction again Both of those teams huge games Second of games on the road against top 20 opponents No, Notre Dame is a team and we talked a little bit about this earlier in the week if you are not a Notre Dame fan And there are certainly a lot of those people out there you better be rooting for Stanford this week This there might not be a loss on the Notre Dame schedule and if they are 12 and over at the end of the year They're in yep, and that's gonna be the debate the lose a Alabama Georgia or the losers 12 and 1 a great SEC championship game That loser versus Notre Dame. That's gonna be the debate here's the things you can't control if you're Notre Dame I mean they would have played Virginia Tech on the road You can't help the Virginia Tech with you know the situation with Josh Jackson and the way they look they're opening out in Florida State right away. We were all like can you believe they know the name goes to Virginia Tech?
It looks amazing. That's gonna be awesome So that's that's a good effort on scheduling to have Virginia Tech on the road in Lane Stadium They had Florida State which again We had no idea that they'd be like this they have USC again Who's down which could be maybe their toughest game left because by then JT Daniels have grown up and SC always has great athletes And it's on the road over in LA so But I'm with you bear they get by Stanford, which is not a foregone conclusion obviously But if they win that game they're gonna be heavily favored without a conference championship game And if they're sitting there 12 and oh no shot that Notre Dame's not in the playoffs It's gonna be 2012 all over again because everybody's gonna keep coming up with these you know I remember the game against pit and South Bend people are trying to come up with ways that Notre Dame could lose and they just Stripping their way to wins and then obviously came down to USC. Yeah, but guys this this feels now We'll see if he in book and do it against Stanford But it just feels like a more competent more complete Notre Dame team than that team that was just finding ways with Yeah, you know what I mean with the defense and goal line stands and the ball bouncing their way It just this feels different now. They went to Vandy got whipped 41 10 came home Barely beat Oregon State gave up 35 in the process then they go out to the glass bowl last week and get run by Toledo So my numbers have them giving up a hundred and thirty nine points in their last three games They sandwiched out where we can stay winning between those road losses They go back on the road this week to Air Force. They've played Vandy. I mentioned these teams, you know Toledo's a spread team Oregon State spread now they come and play this option attack with Air Force who is better than they were Last year defense is coming around. I think they could slow down Nevada enough I Look back last year our Air Force went to Nevada one forty five forty two Nevada gave up five hundred and fifty yards rushing to Air Force I think Air Force offenses better this year.
I think Nevada's defense is worse this year I'll take the Falcons minus a six and a half I think the only thing that I would look into I don't have the schedule in front of me But I'm 99 percent sure next week Air Force has maybe I'm pretty sure that's the case And that would be the only thing you know how yep You're right after in but but you're right on the field in terms of matchups I think you're right on with Air Force now That's a really bad matchup for Nevada's defense after having to play those passing spread teams. I yeah, okay I like them in a phone booth and get after Falcons. Let's go. Just something to factor in but go I Think my up.
I think this week my top play would be at least right now We saw time to go on the we got I'm not solely basing it on the way Oregon lost that game last week But I like I like how at home getting the points against the ducks our FBI numbers actually have cows a favorite in the game Oh small dog. So the numbers say Cal off a buy exactly off a buy a couple of couple of wins of whatever BYU is well ranked ranked defense so much improved under Wilcox I think as well as they get more accustomed to garbers being the guy at quarterback I think their offense will be better there at top 30 defense And I know pervert in that offensive great last week in the final a few minutes of that game Mm-hmm just seems like a spot where this could be like cows Statement when well we actually are going to live up to those expectations. We're gonna get to a bowl this year So while I don't like the spot necessarily for Oregon I think you factor that in factor in the way they lost you think you factor in how good cows defenses I think it's the most important reason and I think Cal plus the two and a half or three at home against or anything There's a really good chance that the bears do win the game in the field I said in the preseason I like how to win this game I gave them out as a season when total over and I thought Oregon was gonna come in this game undefeated I thought Oregon was gonna beat Stanford in the preseason. They should have What's interesting is no, no, no knowing how great the Bay Area is a good for college football game Stanford's on the road you figured it'll be a good crowd in Berkeley for this one You know that ain't happening as much as I would like to seek out give Oregon all they can handle that that line sticks Let's just end minute, you know like you said FBI numbers people everybody watched Oregon We set a record for a pack 12 game on ABC It's it's a fascinating game because as fortunate as Stanford was to win and I've heard plenty of people say they still think Oregon's a better team Which I listen I get wouldn't argue that um Herbert was unbelievable like he I think he said a record to a pack 12 record for completion percentage and regulation You own this one pass and then 98% or something like in every throw was just the right um he's he is a Very very very fascinating player at the next level for me knowing how what we're seeing and I believe I believe that I believe I was in the one word the first couple weeks with all these rookies already getting their turn He's as talented as any of those guys.

It's Ohio State I think uh, you know Linebackers and cats and moir and in lavar airington, you know and all these guys when you take a defense Ohio State Penn State 71 and a half seems like a lot man and is what they're top two in the country and scoring right both average and like 55 54 points a game In both defenses both defenses had signs of trouble as well Yeah, but there's still a lot of town on each side of the defense and Penn State's defense. I have to think he's gonna play Ohio State's offense better than TCU did now Ohio State was very fortunate to get to nine offensive touchdowns in that game, right? Yep.
They had the fumble and then uh Oh, yeah, in the end zone. Uh, that should have been a safe thing. Um, I just think the crowd I'm not trying to take anything away from haskets. We uh, we talked about it with herbie I give me give me gimme haskets.
Give me that if you get 500 on him right now But he's still is young and people want to point out that he went to you know, Michigan last year came in and you know Was great. This is a whole different animal. He is the starter. Yeah, like you know, it's not like spontaneous Go away like you're totally not you're not thinking at that point.
