Week of July 11, 2025 - wsg Ellie Katz, Interlochen Public Radio | Traverse City News Roundup

This week on Currently, we dive into the stories shaping Northern Michigan, starting with the latest in a years-long legal battle between Old Mission Peninsula wineries and Peninsula Township. Beth Milligan of the Traverse City Ticker breaks down what the latest ruling means and what happens next. Then, Interlochen Public Radio's Ellie Katz brings us a cherry crop update, including how late frost and storm damage could lead to one of the smallest harvests in years—and what that means for local farmers and cherry lovers alike. After the break, we look at Traverse City Area Public Schools' proposal for a $17 million indoor sports complex. Beth explains where it would go, how it would be funded, and what students and community members can expect. We also touch on the new concept designs for Rotary Square, now available to view online.  Finally, Ellie shares a surprisingly tricky story about trees: Michigan doesn't allow property owners to insure timberland the way they can insure homes or crops. We explore how that policy is impacting northern Michigan landowners following recent storm damage. This episode is brought to you by lead underwriter Golden-Fowler Home Furnishings: Home Fashion Elevated, located on S. Garfield Avenue in Traverse City. Support also comes from West Shore Bank – committed to the well-being of the community, and The Coin Slot Arcade Bar – a chill hangout in Traverse City featuring a full bar, pinball machines, and a great selection of drinks. Currently is a Compass Local Podcast produced by Pancake Boy Productions.
