Weekly Fishing Report: Barracuda, Calicos, and Rockfish Bite Strong in SoCal Waters

We're looking at a beautiful day ahead with a primo morning low tide of -1.14 feet at 7:04 AM, perfect timing for those early birds already on the water. High tide hits at 2:08 PM reaching 3.64 feet, followed by an evening low of 2.73 feet at 6:10 PM. Sunrise was at 5:44 AM, and we'll have sunset at 7:57 PM, giving us plenty of daylight to work with. The action around SoCal has been heating up! White seabass are making headlines with impressive numbers reported from Oxnard boats. The Mirage out of Channel Islands Sportfishing landed 21 white seabass on their overnight trip, alongside halibut, lingcod, and plenty of rockfish. If you're heading out on a charter, this is definitely the time. For pier anglers, things are a bit mixed. Oceanside Pier has been slower since April with murky water conditions and ongoing beach sand pumping affecting visibility. They're seeing some perch inshore, occasional halibut mid-pier, but the shark action has cooled off with the pier end still under reconstruction. The warm water push is bringing some exciting species into our area. Reports from down south show wahoo, marlin, roosterfish, and yellowtail in the 30-pound class moving up. Water temps are climbing into the mid-70s with clearer, bluer conditions developing each week. For today's hot spots, I'd recommend hitting Santa Monica Bay for barracuda and calico bass. The Monte Carlo out of San Pedro recently reported 7 barracuda kept, 35 released, plus 15 calico bass kept with 120 released—that's the kind of action you want! Another solid bet is working the waters off Palos Verdes for rockfish and sheephead. Bait-wise, anchovies and sardines will be your best friends for the surface action. For the bottom dwellers, squid strips are producing nicely. If you're throwing artificials, try surface iron for the barracuda and yellowtail that are starting to show, or drop some swimbaits for the calicos in the kelp.
