Why the State-Institutionalization of Confucianism—Moral Governance—Inevitably Leads to National Decline
from Why the “1644 Perspective” Resonates Today · host August Cheung
This episode examines a recurring structural problem in Chinese history: why the state-institutionalization of Confucianism—moral governance—tends to lead to national decline. Confucianism works well as personal and family ethics, and can function partially as a professional ethic for officials. However, once elevated into a state ideology, moral legitimacy begins to replace outcome-based accountability, producing a political system that avoids responsibility and becomes deeply risk-averse. Through historical cases such as the Donglin movement in late Ming China and the Southern Song dynasty, this episode shows how “moral states” often lose the capacity to act precisely when survival is at stake.
