For the first part of this edition, we will be talking about Epilepsy - a brain condition where nerve cells don’t signal properly, subsequently causing seizures. Now seizures are uncontrolled bursts of electrical activities that change sensations, behaviors, awareness, and muscle movements. Seizure symptoms can vary widely. Some people may lose awareness during a seizure while others don't. Some people stare blankly for a few seconds during a seizure. Others may repeatedly twitch their arms or legs, movements known as convulsions. Epilepsy accounts for a significant proportion of the world’s disease burden, globally, an estimated 5 million people are diagnosed with epilepsy each year. Its prevalence in the West African subregion, according to a meta-analysis was quoted to be 13 - 15 per 1000 persons.
