The Basel Papyrus has been in the University of Basel’s possession since the 16th century, its contents indecipherable. Once researchers realized how to decode its writing, they were left with what appears to be the journal of a Roman physician, with notes about an interesting illness. La lecture d'un papyrus ancien n'est pas toujours une chose aisée, surtout quand il a été calciné par un incendie. C'est le cas des papyrus retrouvés dans les décombres de Pompéi et d'Herculanum, détruites par l'éruption du Vésuve, en 79 de notre ère. Les archéologues ont retrouvé dans ces ruines, enfouis sous la cendre, pas moins de 1.800 papyrus. L'un d'eux, vieux de 2.000 ans, a été découvert dans les vestiges de la riche bibliothèque d'un patricien qui n'était autre que le beau-frère de Jules César. Les scientifiques auraient bien aimé savoir ce que contenaient ces précieux manuscrits. Mais comment faire pour les déchiffrer ? En effet, si l'on s'était avisé de dérouler ces papyrus, ils seraient sûrement tombés en poussière. La science à la rescousse Il fallait donc trouver le moyen de lire ces manuscrits sans avoir à les déplier. C'est alors que les techniques les plus modernes de la science actuelle sont venues au secours des archéologues. En effet, les papyrus ont été passés aux rayons X. Plus précisément, on a eu recours à la technique de la tomographie. Ce procédé d'imagerie, utilisé en médecine, permet d'obtenir la coupe d'un organe et d'en reconstruire le volume. Appliqué à la lecture des papyrus, il permet d'obtenir des milliers d'images en 3D du contenu de ces manuscrits. Pour mieux les déchiffrer, des chercheurs ont alors décidé de faire appel à l'intelligence artificielle. Dans le même temps, l'un d'entre eux a lancé une sorte de concours, destiné à mettre au point, dans les plus brefs délais, l'algorithme capable de lire les papyrus. C'est un jeune étudiant américain de 21 ans qui a relevé le défi. En effet, l'algorithme élaboré par ses soins a été capable de déchiffrer des lettres grecques sur plusieurs lignes d'un manuscrit. Et il est même parvenu à lire un mot entier, qui signifie "pourpre" en grec. Une étape décisive, qui permettra peut-être d'accéder au contenu de l'ensemble de ces manuscrits et, qui sait, de découvrir les œuvres encore inédites de philosophes et de savants de l'Antiquité gréco-romaine.
