We’ll call it… Overlooked: Past Lives & American Fiction

from Assume It Will Be Brilliant · host Assume It Will Be Brillant

This week we switch it up for you and discuss two of last years Oscar Nominated feature films Past Lives and American Fiction. Written and directed by Celine Song, Past Lives tells the story of Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo) who contemplate the experience and nature of their bond when they reunite 24 years after their separation in South Korea when Nora's family immigrated to the US. American Fiction, a satirical comedy-drama based on the novel Erasure by Percival Everett, was written and directed by Cord Jefferson and tells the story of frustrated writer and professor Thelonius "Monk" Ellison (Jeffery Wright) as he navigates the institutional expectations of the publishing and film industry when it comes to 'Black' books and the stereotypes therein. He returns home where he reconnects with family at the same time as a manuscript he jokingly submitted containing all the stereotypes he abhors suddenly gains popularity with publisher to hilarious effect. We discuss each films reflections on language, family, identity, immigration, stereotypes, and the importance of holding space for relationships that represent parts of us we think we've left behind. We also discuss the limitations and stereotypes faced by black creators in the film and media industry.  We hope you enjoy! 08:29 Discussion of 'Past Lives' 19:59 Discussion of 'American Fiction' 28:34 Exploring Identity and Stereotypes 35:12 Challenging Stereotypes and the Power of Storytelling 36:42 Breaking Stereotypes: The Challenges Faced by Creators of Colour 47:03 The Importance of Diverse Storytelling 51:48 The Challenges of Pursuing Creative Ambitions Instagram: @assumeitwillbebrilliantpod  Music: Humblux - S.H.E.
