Wellness and Longevity with Miray Tayfun, Liz Seegert and Jon Warner

from Rethinking Aging Club Podcast · host Co-Hosts: Linda Sherman, Ray Gordon and Debbie Howard

August is National Wellness Month. Our discussion focused on a new era of wellness with possibilities to understand our health in real time, identify risks before symptoms appear, and benefit from artificial intelligence, though of course challenges still face us.Miray Tayfun, CEO of Vivoo, introduced their at-home health platform, which offers rapid tests and software for analyzing results, emphasizing privacy and integration with Apple Health and other services. New from Vivoo is a plug-and-play device that you can attach to your toilet. It has an optical sensor that allows your urine to flow through the device and measure your urine density to give you information about your hydration - and later this year pH markers - sending data to your mobile phone, which can also be very valuable in geriatric care.Health journalist Liz Seegert pointed out the challenges of fragmented healthcare, particularly for women and older adults. “When we talk about wellness, we have to understand that wellness is not just yoga and green smoothies and herbal tea. It's whether you can get your doctor to take your symptoms seriously, whether you can coordinate care across multiple specialists without losing your mind, whether you have time to schedule your own mammogram while you're also scheduling your mother's cardiology follow-up."John Warner discussed the longevity gap and the need for better care coordination, especially in affordable housing. We have 4.1 million people aged 63 or older in affordable housing in the U.S. CareAxis is building care coordination. He emphasized that for all levels of wealth, healthy longevity requires evolving from reactive healthcare to personalized, proactive health management.Recorded on August 6, 2026, this episode is part of our Wellness and Longevity Series. A few answers from a recent quizhttps://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/26/well/water-hydration-quiz.htmlCoffee is inherently dehydrating - False“Coffee is mostly water and counts toward daily hydration. You may pee more if you drink a lot of it, but this is because of the volume of liquids being consumed, not its diuretic properties, said Dr. Verbalis.”You can get a good amount of water just from the food you eat - True“About 20 percent of your total daily water intake comes from foods, particularly fruits and vegetables, Dr. Muñoz said. Cucumber, iceberg lettuce, celery and watermelon are especially water-rich, as are soups and yogurt, she added. The rest should come from sipping water, tea, coffee, seltzer or other nonalcoholic drinks with meals or throughout the day, said Dr. Joseph G. Verbalis, chief of the division of endocrinology and metabolism at Georgetown University who researches water metabolism.”A nonalcoholic beer can actually be a source of hydration - True“Alcohol is generally dehydrating. It suppresses ADH, the hormone that regulates bodily fluids, causing you to produce large amounts of urine, Dr. Kavouras said, so you pee a lot, and that can lead to dehydration. This is why it’s recommended to sip water with alcoholic drinks. Or to drink water before bedtime if you’ve had alcohol, he said.Nonalcoholic beer or booze won’t have these effects, and can contribute to overall hydration, Dr. Muñoz said.”===========Articles by Liz SeegertGulfshore Life - Your Biological Age Should You Test? 7-1-26Scientific American: America is embarking on a risky experiment with GLP-1s and aging 7-19-26  Presented by Ellen Khalifa in our News for the Ages by Rethinking Aging Club podcast recorded on August 4.Stanford Center on Longevity Magazine: Tackling the Family Caregiver Squeeze  7-9-26Scientific American: Controversial New Alzheimer’s Drugs Offer Hope—But at a High Cost 8-16-25    Association of Health Care Journalists - Tip Sheet: What to know about post-menopause health risks 11-16-23  ============Vivoo PressLongevity Technology Newsletter 8-4-26: The next longevity clinic may already be in your bathroom -  Vivoo’s CEO explains how continuous biomarker monitoring and passive diagnostics could shift healthcare from episodic treatment to prevent prevention, by Eleanor GarthBBC 6-22-26: Do you know your ‘sweat score’?
