De 31-jarige Alkmaarder maakte vorig jaar de transfer naar het Arabische Al-Shabab en vertelt uitgebreid over zijn motieven voor die keuze. Ook gaat hij dieper in op de ziekte van zijn vriendin Emma Heesters en hoe ze daar samen mee omgaan.Wesley is openhartig als het gaat om zijn keuze voor een Saoedische club. “Je kan er omheen draaien, dat het een mooi project en een mooie uitdaging is, maar feit is dat de financiële compensatie ongelooflijk is. Dat mag ook wel, want het is een grote aanpassing en je bent ver weg van vrienden en familie.” Wesley was vroeger geen gemakkelijke jongen en botste regelmatig met trainers en clubs. Nu is hij rustiger. “Als jonge speler wil je te graag, te veel en te snel. Laatst had ik het erover met een voormalig trainer, Stefano Pioli. ‘Ik was vroeger wel ongeduldig, hè.’ We konden er nu hartelijk om lachen.”Eind vorig jaar werd baarmoederhalskanker ontdekt bij Wesley’s vriendin, zangeres Emma Heesters. Er brak een turbulente periode aan voor het stel. “Ze is zo ongelooflijk sterk. De dag dat wij het hoorden, had ze de première van haar show. Die deed ze gewoon alsof er niets aan de hand was. He also opens up about his girlfriend Emma Heesters’ illness and how they’re coping with it together.Wesley is candid about his choice to join a Saudi club. “You can beat around the bush and call it a great project or an exciting challenge, but the fact is that the financial compensation is incredible. And rightly so, because it’s a big adjustment and you’re far away from friends and family.”Wesley wasn’t the easiest character in his younger years, regularly clashing with coaches and clubs. Now, he’s calmed down. “As a young player, you want too much, too soon. I was talking about it recently with a former coach of mine, Stefano Pioli. ‘I used to be quite impatient, didn’t I?’ We could laugh about it now.”At the end of last year, Wesley’s girlfriend, famous singer Emma Heesters, was diagnosed with cervical cancer. A turbulent period began for the couple. “She is incredibly strong. The day we found out about it she had the premiere of her show. She did it as if nothing had happened.
