West Ashley Tunnel Breaks Through
from Charleston News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
West Ashley just hit a major milestone with the completion of the massive Miss Harper tunnel—11 months of relentless digging, 130 feet down, 20,000+ feet long, connecting both sides of the neighborhood. Part of the largest sewer project in Charleston Water System’s history, it’s designed to stop sewage overflows during rainstorms and support the region’s growing population. Veteran tunnel driver Cliff Surrells, who’s been underground for 36 years, says it’s “not that hard”—though they did find some shark teeth. The tunnel will carry sewage from West Ashley, Johns Island, and more to Plum Island Treatment Plant, built to last a century. Still another year and a half to go—installing pipes, sealing the tunnel, and connecting it to the old system—with new screening stations above ground to catch wipes and other no-flush items.
