West Memphis Three. In 1993, three eight-year-old boys—Stevie Branch, Christopher Byers, and Michael Moore—were murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas. Teenagers Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr. were later convicted of the killings. The case would become one of America’s most debated criminal cases, raising serious questions about the investigation, the evidence presented at trial, allegations of a coerced confession, and the influence of the era’s “Satanic Panic.” After spending approximately 18 years in prison, Echols, Baldwin, and Misskelley were released in 2011 after entering Alford pleas, allowing them to maintain their innocence while formally pleading guilty.
