West Nile virus detected in Springfield Township mosquito sample

from KYW Newsradio Audio On-Demand

West Nile virus has been detected in a mosquito sample tested by Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection at Mount Sharon Cemetery in Springfield, Delaware County. The township announced the positive sample in a Facebook post to the community Friday afternoon. Springfield says its health officer and members from the DEP are notifying residents in the affected area around the cemetery. Residents are encouraged to remove all standing water from around their homes, stay indoors during peak mosquito hours from dusk to dawn, and wear long sleeves and closed-toe shoes if possible. They should also use repellents if available. Anyone who needs information is asked to contact the PA DEP's Southeast Office at 484-250-5900. (photo credit: Pawich Sattalerd/Getty Images)
