According to media reports the United Nations secretary-general's Antonio Guetteres envoy for Western Sahara last week wrapped up the first talks in six years over the future of the territory mostly controlled by Morocco, saying the sides have agreed to meet again early next year. Six years after talks broke down; the meeting took place on Wednesday and Thursday, with neighbouring Algeria and Mauritania also attending. The meeting has been viewed as the start of a new chapter in the political process. The talks were brought forward as part of adopting Resolution 2440 as the UN Security Council called on parties concerned to the dispute over the territory to engage in talks. On the line we are joined by: • Jose Nascimento who is a human rights lawyer/author.• Ebrahim Dean is a senior researcher at the Afro Middle East.
