Jack shared that Layla was also inspired by the Persian love story Layla and Majnun.We played a bit of Freddie Scott’s version of Am I Grooving YouAbigail entered Sure the One You Need (written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards) into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music with a comparison to Takin’ Care of Business by Bachman-Turner Overdrive. We reasoned that this similarity came from a “common musical ancestor”; Jack pitched Chuck Berry. Evidently, an early arrangement of Takin’ Care of Business strongly resembled The Beatles’ Paperback Writer, which was inspired by Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode. Later, Keith Richards played in Berry’s band for two 1986 concerts in St. Louis that were recorded in the film Hail! Hail!
