What an Earthquake Can Teach Us About Faith

from Orthodox Christian Podcast · host Orthodox Christian Podcast

When the Earth Shakes, Where Is Your Faith? An earthquake can change everything in a matter of seconds. The ground moves. Walls shake. Windows rattle. Fear takes over. And suddenly, everything we thought was stable reminds us how little control we actually have. But an earthquake raises a deeper spiritual question:What is your life really built upon?In this Orthodox Christian sermon, we reflect on earthquakes, fear, uncertainty, and the unshakable foundation found in Jesus Christ. The Gospel tells us about the wise man who built his house upon the rock. Christ does not promise that storms will never come. He promises that those who build their lives upon Him can stand when the storm arrives."Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock." - Matthew 7:24We explore why fear itself is not a failure of faith, how Christians can respond when disaster strikes, and why trusting God does not mean ignoring practical wisdom or refusing to protect ourselves and our families. The Psalms give us one of the most powerful reminders:"Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed." - Psalm 46:2What does it mean to say those words when the ground is actually moving beneath our feet? This sermon also looks at the earthquake that occurred at the moment of Christ's Crucifixion and the profound connection between the shaking of creation and the mystery of the Cross and Resurrection.Sometimes our lives experience their own earthquakes.A marriage begins to fall apart.A loved one becomes ill.Financial security disappears.A family relationship breaks.A future we carefully planned suddenly becomes uncertain. And we ask:"Where is God?"The answer of the Gospel is not that Christians will never experience suffering. The answer is that Christ remains with us in the middle of it."I am with you always, even to the end of the age." - Matthew 28:20This message is an invitation to examine the foundation of our lives before the next storm comes.Do we build our security on money? On health? On our careers? On our plans? On other people?Or on Christ?Because everything in this world can change. But Christ remains. The earth may shake. Our circumstances may change. Our plans may collapse. But the Rock does not move.May this sermon bring peace to anyone living with fear, uncertainty, or anxiety after an earthquake or another unexpected event. May it remind us to pray, to care for one another, to prepare wisely, and above all, to place our trust in the One who remains faithful through every storm."God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." - Psalm 46:1If the world around you feels unstable today, take a moment to stop, breathe, pray, and remember:The ground beneath you may shake, but the love of God does not.
