What are the right choices? Matthew 6:19-24 (Holman) Setting the context: This scripture is part of the Sermon on the Mount. It is some of the most famous teaching of the ministry of Jesus and covers a wide range of topics. In this scripture Jesus is teaching about God and possessions and is focusing on how we live a life that is pleasing to God. The Main question: You are making choices every day. What are the right ones? Discovering the Bible: Choose the right thing to store. Choose the right thing to see. Choose the right thing to serve. Questions for discussion groups Getting to know you question: Have you always made the right choices: In a couple of sentences, name a choice that went well and one that went poorly. Into the Bible questions: Read Matthew 6:19-21: these passages talk about what you collect on earth and how long they last. What happens to them in our lives? Why are we collecting them? What is missing in our lives and why do we think we need them. What do you think treasures in heaven are? What does God value and want us to store? Read Matthew 6:22-23: what does Jesus mean when he says the eye is the lamp of the body? What kind of things to we "see" in our lives and how does it make us feel. Have you experienced your body being full of darkness? When? How about full of light? What was the situation? Read Matthew 6:24: What are we slaves to? Why do we choice what we choose? What would a life look like if we were fully devoted to God? What are some of things we can do on earth to help others become fully devoted to God? Application question: You will be making choices every day this week. How do you choose in a way that will store, see and serve the right things?
