What Are You Attached To?

What are you attached to? In Luke 5, Jesus encounters Levi sitting at the tax office, a man whose life seemed completely contrary to the calling represented by his own name. The name Levi means “attached,” and throughout Scripture, the tribe of Levi was set apart to belong to God and minister before Him. Yet this Levi was attached to something very different. Then Jesus walks directly into his tax office and gives him two simple words: “Follow Me.” Levi leaves everything behind and follows Christ. The man who once took from others becomes the man who opens his home and gathers others. The tax collector becomes Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist. His story reminds us that no one is too far gone for God. Christ meets us even in our “tax office,” but He does not intend to leave us there. The question is not simply where you are today. The question is: What are you attached to? What gives you your identity? What are you afraid to lose? What keeps you up at night? What are you holding onto that prevents you from fully following Christ? We are called to be set apart, to belong to God, and to become what we already are through baptism: His sons and daughters, His image-bearers, a royal priesthood and a people consecrated to Him. Come as you are, but don’t leave as you came.
