What Are You Hungry For?

from Proverbs Daily Podcast · host Fred Lynch

Proverbs 16:26: “A worker’s appetite works for him because his hunger drives him onward.” Today’s Episode: What Are You Hungry For? I was today years old when this really sank in: the world already produces enough food to feed everybody on the planet. Check the sources, I ain’t lyin’ Everybody. And yet somebody’s child is going to bed hungry tonight. Today is World Food Day. Usually that gets us thinking about what we don’t have. Reading the book Abundance by Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler got me asking a different question: what could we do with what we already have? The Food and Agriculture Organization confirms it. But enough food somewhere doesn’t mean every family can afford it or safely reach it. War can block a delivery. Prices can empty a grocery cart before anybody gets to the register. Whole Foods? My wallet heard ‘whole paycheck.’ Food can spoil before it reaches the people who need it. So we’ve got work to do. This proverb starts with something familiar: an appetite gets a worker moving. Your stomach has a way of putting something on your agenda. My stomach has rearranged a whole workday. Apparently, lunch outranks everything on my calendar. Listen again to Proverbs 16:26 in the New Living Translation: “It is good for workers to have an appetite; an empty stomach drives them on.” This is an observation about what motivates work. Are you driven by appetite? Then welcome to the world of being human. Now let me carry that appetite into a bigger question. What if somebody else’s empty stomach could get us moving too? Imagine knowing a grandmother hasn’t eaten and feeling the same urgency you’d feel if she were yours. A child. Your child. Would we still be satisfied with “That’s just how the world works”? I believe we can enter an age of abundance. Technology can help us grow food, preserve it, and get it where it needs to go. But we have to build the access alongside the innovation. I want to see everybody come home to a nutritious meal. And I want that desire to set my agenda. What are you hungry enough to work toward? 🔥 REMEMBER A hunger for a better world ought to put food on somebody’s table. 🙏🏽 PRAYER God, enlarge our appetite for justice, generosity, and shared abundance. 🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGE Check your local food pantry’s requested-items list. Choose one item you can afford, buy it, and deliver it. If money is tight, contact the pantry and schedule one volunteer shift. Put the delivery or shift on your calendar.
