Welcome to the Tweep Trends podcast. Hey, Evac, what's trending today? Hey, I'm Evac, hey girl! And you are tuned in to Tweep Trends.
It's the quickest way to find out what's trending today. We are back and it's National Health Education Week. Let's get started. This is National Health Education Week.
And when you think about it, this entire month covers a lot of health type topics. October is heavy, just all around heavy. We talked about domestic violence, and we know that domestic violence can mess with you in a number of ways. It can mess with your mental health.
It can mess with your physical health. Your emotional health. It hits on everything. We also talked about breast cancer awareness.
There was also the depression screening day. And although it wasn't this month, last month, it was the sexual health. So there are a lot of topics under the category or heading of health. And we all need to be educated on it.
So the fact that this is National Health Education Week, I am here for it. I'm ready. And so, of course, you know, I do my little research. And in doing so, I ran across the society for public health education or SOPI.
They have something for every day of the week. They have some type of focus. And none of them are the same. And honestly, I think they could go probably a year or more and have a different topic every single day and never repeat the same thing because there are so many things that fall under health and health education that we could go on.
And this conversation literally could and should go on and on and on and on and on. So I want to highlight the days that they have going on this week. And to start with, yesterday was the kickoff for the week. And the focus for yesterday was health equity and racism elimination.
And you may be saying to yourself, now what does that have to do with health? Like you mentioned health equity, but what about racism and elimination? But I think people are so quick to put racism in a box that they don't see where racism hits on other things other than just people saying, I don't like you because of the color of your skin or where you're from or what you do. It's deeper than that.
And so yesterday they had a webinar called equity and anti-racism approaches to public health. Now I tried to get in, I called multiple times, I tried to go in through the Zoom regular, and they met their limit and couldn't get in. I even tried calling back later on thinking maybe somebody got off and there would be space and I could get in there, did not happen. So I did see where they said they are going to post those webinars later on in the month.
But I'm chomping at the bit now. I was like, hey, I need something now because I was all ready for that. I'm just beyond ready. So in the next segment I'm going to cover what's happening today and throughout the rest of the week.
And the takeaway from yesterday is don't wait until just before the webinar starts to get on there. Get on early so you can get in one of those seats. So if I hadn't said it before, I'm going to say it now. I'm really excited for this week.
And so yesterday Sophie kicked off the National Health Education Week with a webinar. And the focus of that webinar was health equity and racism elimination. Now, like I said before, I was very upset that I was not able to get in. I even tried getting in later and all sorts of stuff didn't work for me.
But they did say that they will provide a link for you to be able to hear it play back. So once that does come out, I will put it out there so that you can get it because I plan on checking it out myself. Now let's move on to today, Tuesday. Today's theme is emergency preparedness.
Are you ready? Now one of the big questions is how are health education specialists fighting COVID-19? So what they want you to do is they've got another webinar. I'm going to put that information out there.
And their focus is to teach people about emergency preparedness from various professionals. And they're going to share their experiences from the front lines. And basically, you know, if you haven't experienced any type of emergency or disaster, including COVID, so pretty much everybody has because none of us is going to save COVID. There are certain things that you need to have in place, certain things that you need to try to do.
And health education specialists play a vital role in creating plans to help you to execute, you know, with you in your community so that you guys can stay safe during time. So they're going to be very important for everybody to go and check out for the simple fact that all of us at some point in time, I can say that definitely have experienced some type of emergency or disaster and needed some guidance on how to get through it because none of us had seen anything like COVID before. So, you know, that one's a definite put it on your calendar. Now, Wednesday, tomorrow, the focus is mental health and wellness.
Mm hmm. The name of this particular webinar is supporting employee mental health and well-being during COVID-19. All things come back to COVID. COVID has had such a serious effect on people in so many different ways.
When you think about your employees and the fact that people went from regular go to get up, go to work type situation to now you stand at home, but you still got to get up and go to work at your house. And then, you know, you're missing that social portion and therefore you're slowly becoming a hermit. At least that's what you feel like. And there are a lot of negatives to that type of seclusion because humans, by nature, are social.
For the most part, the majority of us enjoy social activity. Now, there are those that don't and, you know, there's always an exception to the rule, but they're going to be talking about that on Wednesday. Thursday's focus is on health literacy. Words matter.
And so that webinar is scheduled from 2 to 3 30 Eastern. And here's one thing you probably didn't know. Low health literacy is estimated to cost the United States economy up to get this number $236 billion every year. What?
Oh my gosh. So what they're saying is that an estimated 90 million Americans have low health literacy. And those groups include those in lower socioeconomic status, lower education achievement, those with low English status. Those with low English proficiency or non-native speakers of English and those who are elderly.
Now, just the other day, we talked about the fact that the elderly population is growing by leaps and bounds because the health care is getting better. We're getting people to live longer. Therefore, we've got more older people out there. So Thursday, definitely, if you've never even thought about the health literacy as a thing, I recommend you check that one out.
And then moving on to Friday, Friday is career settings for a health education promotion specialist. What does that mean? Basically learn some more about health education specialists. Where do they work?
What do they do? What kind of roles do they have? You know, just get deeper into like school health, nonprofits, clinical, government, private business settings. There are so many different things.
And that's one thing I noticed that as a child growing up, if there was, there could be a job out there in society. But if nobody I knew had that job, then basically I didn't realize that that job existed. So, you know, for parents out there who are like, you know what, I want little Johnny to consider something, but they're saying they don't like blood, they don't want to be a doctor. There are so many other things out there that are being a doctor and still being in the health realm.
So, I think this would be perfect for people who are undecided or trying to figure out what to do, where to go and how to get it done. That was today's episode of Tweet Trends. I hope you enjoyed it. I hope you learned something.
And I hope you're inspired to go check out one of these webinars or as many of them as you can. Once again, don't wait until the last minute to try to get on them because I guarantee you, if there is a limit, it will be reached. So, once again, the organization is SOFI. That's a society for public health education.
And you can find them just about anywhere on social media. You can find them on Twitter at Sophie Tweets, S-O-P-H-E-T-W-E-T-S. You can find them on Instagram at Sophie Graham, S-O-P-H-E-G-R-A-M. You can find them on YouTube at Sophie Stats.
That's S-O-P-H-E-S-T-A-T-S. And you can find them on Facebook, Sophie Health, S-O-P-H-E-H-A-L-T-H. And you can find me on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, at HeVet, that's at H-E-E-E-T-E, or you can always look for the hashtag Tweet Trends. Now, I'm going to do my best to put out something every day so that you know what's going on in case you forgot or whatever puts some links out there so that you can actually register for these various webinars.
Get in there, don't procrastinate, don't wait thinking you're doing them a favor by, oh no, I'm not going to try to jump in. You better try to jump in there because you might be like me yesterday and get locked out. But to send all that to say that this is a great week if you haven't put that into health education, then this is a great time to start, not just for yourself, but for your family, for your community, and for our entire world. Okay, get out there, go learn something, and I will see you guys back here on Thursday.
