"What Do I Need to Remember When a Loved One Passes Away?" (Morning Air)

Let’s be real: losing a loved one is rough. On this Morning Air episode, John Morales gets super personal about his mom's recent passing, and he brought in Monsignor Robert Dempsey to share some serious wisdom on how to spiritually prepare when someone we love is nearing the end. Guess what? It’s not just about making sure they’re comfy and cozy physically (though, of course, that's important too!). It’s about spiritual care: getting them ready to meet God with all the grace possible. 🙏   John talks about how he was able to find a priest to give his mom the Anointing of the Sick and the Apostolic Pardon right before she passed away. It was amazingly beautiful: her eyes opened, she was at peace, and she was totally ready to meet Jesus. Talk about a gift.   So how can we handle it when someone’s on their way to meet Jesus? Here's what Msgr. Dempsey shared:   Anointing of the Sick: You don’t have to wait until the very end! If someone’s seriously sick or about to undergo risky surgery, it’s time to call the priest. This sacrament is spiritual armor to help them carry their cross and stay strong in their faith. Plus, it’s always better when they’re alert and can fully participate.   Viaticum: This is basically the “last meal” but in the holiest way possible. It’s the final Holy Communion to prepare them for their journey.    Apostolic Pardon: This one’s huge. It’s like a clean slate before entering heaven: an indulgence that removes any remaining temporal punishment for sin. And if a priest isn’t available? The Church’s got you covered with other ways to receive this grace.   Now, one thing Monsignor Dempsey kept saying (and John totally agreed): make sure your family knows you want a Catholic funeral. Like, don’t just assume they’ll figure it out. People are busy but the funeral Mass is SO important. It’s all about commending the soul to God and praying for His mercy, not just some sentimental goodbye. No keeping them on the mantel or dividing them up; get them buried in a cemetery.   Dealing with funeral arrangements can feel like planning a wedding, but the most important thing is the Mass of Christian Burial.    Heaven is the goal!
