What Does AI Safety Really Mean?
from Automated Societies Hosted by ADM+S Centre
AI systems are becoming increasingly powerful and embedded in everyday life — from workplaces and education to healthcare and government services. But as these technologies evolve, so do questions about safety, accountability and trust. Before we can make AI safe, we need to understand what safety means. What risks should we prioritise? Who decides which risks matter most? And who should be responsible for ensuring AI systems are developed and used safely — technology companies, governments, or both? In this episode of the ADM+S Automated Societies podcast, host Dr Jake Goldenfein is joined by Dr Henry Fraser and Professor Kimberlee Weatherall to explore the complex and evolving debate around AI safety. They discuss how we define AI risks, the challenges of regulating rapidly changing technologies, and the role of research, governance and policy in shaping safer AI futures.
