What Does it Mean that Pope Leo XIV is an Augustinian? (Father Simon Says)

On Father Simon Says, Pat from Brooklyn called in with a great question: What does it mean that Pope Leo XIV is an Augustinian?   Fr. Simon explained that the Augustinians are a religious order that started in the 1200s, rooted in the rule of life written by St. Augustine of Hippo. He was a bishop who deeply admired monastic living. But instead of hiding away in the desert like early hermits, Augustinians blended prayerful community life with active ministry, serving as priests in the world while living in spiritual brotherhood.   The order is all about living simply, serving faithfully, and loving truthfully... just like St. Augustine taught.
